Description: 1979 Mk1 Golf - Series 1 1.5LD for sale

I have owned this car for 6 years and was my daily until being laid up and garaged in 2018. The car is totally original bar an aftermarket sunroof and tape deck radio head unit (sunroof does not leak and the original door cards and trim remain uncut).

Whilst the car and engine runs it is being offered in need of attention and without MOT. Having reached just short 200,000miles on the original engine it is in need of a little work to bring back to the road reliably. I have owned MK1 golfs before this one and focused on buying on body condition and originality, everything else can easily be sorted as needed. This golf benefits from only 2 previous owners and extensive service history.

The body is largely rust free with very small blisters in a handful of places with what is believed to be original paintwork - there are 2 replacement panels that I can see, those being the bonnet and rear tailgate which were done prior to my ownership. The ignition has also been converted to a push button.

I am very happy to discuss the details with any serious interested party - it is not perfect but I can tell you will struggle to find another Series 1 body is as solid and unmodified condition. The wiring has not been hacked apart and the really hard to find Series 1 parts are still there - the tailgate inner trim and passenger footwell shelf (which usually disappears due to water ingress) for example - this speaks of a well looked after car.

The last MOT was in 2018 and will need to be trailered away. I can send a video of the engine running and further pictures as required. The original engine will not take a lot - the issue is its drawing air into the fuel supply. I got the car running again after two years in storage with a new battery and a little TLC. That said it is a 41 year old diesel so be under no illusion this sounds like a tractor and needs a bit of care and attention.

I have spent a significant amount before the car was laid up, for example;
  • refurbished injection pump
  • refurbished starter motor
  • bilstein and eibach suspension
  • extensive servicing/MOTs at reputable specialist known to the local mk1 owners
Additional parts included with the sale:
  • I purchased a complete low mileage AAZ engine for a conversion I never quite got around to - this was purchased and remains in its delivery cling wrap so buyers will have to take a look for themselves (I was told it was a complete engine).  The AAZ is a direct fit and an easy conversion if preferred and is sought after but VW fans - this is worth c£1,500 on its own if you can find one.
  • Set of Italian dished alloys with tyres (one alloy has been welded)
  • Plethora of spare parts including full brown interior carpet, chrome waist trim, injection pump and twin headlight grill (see pic) including front windscreen (probably worth c£500 if sold separately)
I had great plans for the car, and it is worth putting in the effort given it is a brilliantly solid original Series 1, however I could not make my mind up either to invest in the original engine keeping it stock or install the AAZ - alas it is for someone else as I have simply lost my mojo for golfs! May consider a p/x but it would need to be something interesting.

Thanks for reading - any socially distanced inspection welcomed for serious buyers. Car is located in Woking, Surrey.

Bank transfer only. Cleared funds before release. Buyer to arrange their own transport - car will need to be trailered away.

The additional set of alloys appear to be Viking Felgen Italian made from the 80s. Reasonably lightweight and I now remember buying them because I wanted something interesting and similar to BBS E50s without the ‘scene tax’ .

I believe they are a direct fit for the golf. They could come out really well with a bit of elbow grease. See pics in dropbox for info and another eBay listing for indication of value.

The car is listed on eBay and other platforms. Thanks for reading.
