What came with the original key set?

And how many keys?

Hi everyone

Could anyone clarify what keys would have been originally provided when the Mk1 was new please, and also what the number on the tab  relates to in this photo?

Is the other small black strip round the other side of the key ring also something significant?

Trying to work out if I need to source some keys/get some cut to get it back to original spec.

Did the Mk1 come with one set of spares too originally?

Thanks a lot

What year car and spec car do you have?
The Mk1 ran from 1974 to 1992 so a lot changed in that time….

The keys pictured closely match those of my own ('83 Campaign).

The square topped key at the bottom of the image is for the fuel filler cap? It's not just quite the same as mine but very close

The other key with the VW roundal is for the glove box.

As the main door/ignition key (not in your image) doesn't have its number stamped on it the small black tag (should be plastic) has it embossed on it instead.

If original, the fuel tank key and the glove box key will have their numbers stamped onto them and no tab was required.

The longer (metal?) tag in your image I haven't seen before. Although the engraving looks professional the tag itself looks hand cut and off square. I'm only guessing but would it be part of a cut down chassis number / VIN plate?

The small round peg like key is possibly for manually pulling up a non-electric radio antenna.

On my 1988 cabriolet and 1978 Scirocco the ignition key does the doors, boot and glove box. Square key is fuel filler cap.

The small black tab on my 78 Scirocco has the key number stamped on it but mines made of leather not plastic… I don't have the black tag for the 88 Golf…

I've never seen the longer plastic tag with the W55…… numbers on it..

Mine came with about 6 keys. One for each door, one for the boot (that didn't work) one for the ignition (a rover blank originally cut for a golf!) and one for  the after market fuel cap

I never did find the lock for the sixth key. Possibly it unlocks the universe and all the answers that mankind has been asking throughout the ages.

Or maybe not

47 is the answer.

My Original 81 came with 2 keys, one for every lock and one Valet that only unlocked the Drivers door and ignition.

My Cabby (90, 92, 93 and 89 parts) was a single key for all locks.
