Eibach lowering springs......or alternatives!

Post

Hi Folks,

I have recently joined the mk1 ownership with this fab original mk1 golf. As much as I love how original it is, I really hate its stance. I hate the nose up front end. I will be lowering it in the next month. i was thinking the eibach springs. I believe these drop the front by 35-40mm and back 30-40mm. My concern is the "up to" 5mm difference between front and back drop would not level it out enough…..? Also when I google pics of the Eibach they still sit quite high.

I really want to stay away from coilovers as I don't want it too harsh and I don;t have a massive budget. What other options are there for up to £350 ish?

I would love to see some picks of some Eibach setup or alternatives?

Here is my golf as it currently stands.

Hi pal, welcome to the club. I have just fitted a H+R cup kit to my sportline. I was looking at the eibach/ bilstein kit as well but went with H+R in the end as it just got better reviews all round so for your budget feels like its worth a look. I paid £350 for my cupkit, £40 febi top mounts and bump stops for front, £35 rear mounts very important, new bolts (you will need these) £8, spring compressor £12 and I also got some hammerite spray paint as you keep the original spring housing on the fronts of all kits so wire brush them and given them a nice paint while they are off along with the spring cups £15………………… blood, sweet and tear…. plenty as the bolts are hard graft to crack loose!

Anyway to your question I had the exact same issue my front tyre to arch gap was 55mm and my rear was 15mm so really low. The H+R kit also lowers up to 40mm. Now with it all replaced my car sits perfect and level, and floor to arch measurement - the front is 600mm and rear 601mm if that helps you to understand how the car will sit.

Biggest tip I can give you is that you need to replace the rear rubber mounts. There is a kit you need to buy ebay item 31773269 as this is what compresses over time and makes the back end sag. Also make sure you put it all back together correctly missing a part out or putting it in upside down like a previous owner on mine wouldnt help either. Also with the rears been heavy the springs will have also sagged over time too.

Check out my build thread for more info as its also worth putting new top mounts on while you have the front off.
