I have recently purchased an older VW Golf I. The model is a convertible 1.5 automatic from 1983 ( carburator type ). It will not start when it's hot. When I turn the key nothing happens. I have switched starter and starter relay, which has not solved the problem and the bottom of the ignition switch has also been changed. I also made a shortcut on the p switch.
Help please !!!!!!!!

If you have an automatic, then I need more information.

1. have you changed the main power cable to the starter?
2. have you changed the battery to frame and frame to engine ground.
3. have you have your battery for a while and have you had it tested?

Are the heat shields in place on the starter.

Starter relay?  as in the Heat soak relay?
or are you talking about the starter solenoid (totally different).

The heat soak relay prevents these types of issues.
There was a TSB about installing a heat soak relay to off load the high current off the ignition switch and place a more direct path from the battery to the starter solenoid.

If you don't have a Heat soak relay, which I will link to in a bit.  When this is happening if you look for the starter solenoid wire:

Place the car in Park, brake fully engaged, and key in to the run (NOT START).

Jumper the above wire to the Positive Battery Post and if your starter spins, install the heat soak relay.

If your starter spins, then it isn't your starter.

Also if you place a meter on this point to ground and turn the key, I would suspect that you have @ 10v. to little to spin a hot starter.

If you don't have the heat shields, then you are burning your starters out.

Heat Shield and brackets.

I used a FORD starter relay as the heat soak relay, and mounted it to the Inner fender by the strut tower.

The wire from the ignition switch in the picture is cut.
The side going to the starter is connected to a big lug.
The side from the Cabin (ignition switch) goes to the Pick Wire of the relay.
The relay earths via the bracket base, so all you have to do is to run a big wire to the free big lug from the battery positive……
