At the bottom of the advert for the auctioned Golf is an interesting graph of Mk1 GTi prices.

Also the "What we Think section makes interesting reading….

Well the buyer got a good project car, as the engine bay was clean but he didn't apply any to the engine itself, the
Strut mounts are bad so I suspect that they and the struts need replacing, the interior while nice isn't spiffy, oh and no radiator cards… I call that selective cleaning.

You can ask whatever you want, it all depends on what you get for it and what kind of person pays a premium price.

Over here that may have got 3500USD
I know that a one owner Diesel Golf LS 81 with 300K+ can get 8000 for it.

I mean I only paid 1500 for one of my cabbies and it looked better than that one to me.

Price Trends For VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTi

Nice little car and worth every penny I would suggest. Unmolested and solid tin top.

Hopefully mine is worth similar and on the up.

Erm, looking at the pictures of the underside it would appear to have had a flash over re-spray in the not to distant past. The edges of the cills (sills?) are bent up from jacking in the wrong place and loads of other bits and bobs all over the place.

I'm the last one to ever comment on prices as I'm always so far out on what other people think it's untrue but, well,  DAMN! 10k for that? I'd put it more at 5k personally and then only to someone who really wants one and doesn't know what they're looking at.

We should big up these prices if the owners club says it’s worth a load of money then we all benefit.

Why would an xr2 or 3 I f the same age be worth so much more than a golf?  If the owners of the 150-200 cars on this club just refused to sell for anything less than 10k then that becomes the market price

Just a thought and I am sure there are downsides to this approach but I’d rather a golf gti over an xr2 all day long. Not saying I don’t admire and respect the Ford but at the time I didn’t like it as I have got older and slightly less opinionated then I appreciate them.

I am glad to hear your comments on the prices of GTi's.

As BackinBlack says - why should an XR3 etc be worth "so much more" than a Gti……………….

…. and totally agree with bored know regarding the condition of the car - all that over-spray underneath  -yuk!

cdgthreesalmons  nowhere near as good as yours mucker  ;)

I think with the Ford it's due to the rise in prices of the mk1's and mk2's.

As the mk1's are now considered to be 'proper classics' and the mk2's are probably also there too now, then the price goes up as they are 'investments' and the good ones are worth more and the not so good ones can be bought cheaper and made good and sold at a profit.

This means that if you're a Ford guy then your only option is the newer stuff and if you want the newer stuff you want the best. ir the Sporty one that might be worth more in the future and the whole damn circus runs around again.

Look at Campers. Lets face a 15 year old ex-builders van with 300k on the clock isn't worth 15k. But that's what people are paying cos it's a VW and comes with an 'image'. They then spend another 20k on it!!!!!!!!!!

the worlds gone mad

Early Polo's used to be cheap and cheerful and plentiful (except the mk1 of course that rusted as soon as you looked at it!) but they're all going up in price 'cos the golf has gone up in price.

Don't worry I'm sure it'll all crash again in the not too distant future.

Like they say with houses, massive price gains are great if you're selling. But if you want to buy you're completely  ****** .

I like the idea that a car should be cheap enough for a person to buy and mess around with as they want. I'm not a fan of the whole 'it's got have an original spec this on it 'cos it keeps it original and so is worth more money' thing.

Unless you want a concourse car. In which case I doff my cap to you.

Of course I can't afford a GTI so maybe I'm just biased

Agree with Borednow that Ford XR series car values are being inflated with the value of earlier Escorts dragging up later stuff, again similar to VW Campers/Buses. The Fords also benefit from a big "halo" effect from Fords rallying and motorsport history.

Peugeot has a more recent rallying history but think the market as be skewed by a couple of museum piece 205 GTIs making @£30,000 at auction and causing the quantative easing money sloshing around to jump on that band wagon. It's so going to end in tears just like every other time….

Also agree with Yomp that its nothing special but all things considered is £9,000 what an good to average GTI fetches these days? The blurb does give it a glowing gloss but the pics are at least honest. It must also be on of that last 1.6litre cars but not sure if that's a good or bad thing.
