Hi, does anyone have any info on my 1979 GTI, ive had a birth cert from vw but they have put it had 5j alloys m485 as an option, the on the build sheet 5.5j 175/70 sr 13 80H
i feel they have made a mistake, but after weekly emails since November they have supplied a new build sheet which reads 5j now.
Did the GTI have 5j? Everything i can find says not 5.5J is GTI spec.
Anyone know for sure?.

According to the GTI release press pack it was 5 1/2" x 13" (steels) from the beginning.

In a later official spare parts workshop manual there's a list of available replacement alloys, only one of which is 5" x 13"… part number 531 601 025 A (middle image of the five pictured), however it's specifically excluded from fitment to the 82Kw Golf (GTI).

It superficially looks like the 5 1/2" x 13" alloys on the '79 GTI pictured below, but it is definitely a different wheel both in size and casting .

Below… Close-ups of that 5" wheel on a current advert in Germany.

Just to add to the confusion, check out this site again… http://www.vwtyp17.de/Berichte/acodes.htm

M485 is listed as being the designation for both 5" and 5 1/2" x 13 alloys.

That info. presumably came from somewhere, perhaps even VW themselves and as you say the ambiguity has lead to them being mistaken?
