Have not owned a mk1 gti for many years, back when leaded fuel was around, my question is will my mk1 gti run on super unleaded?

Yup, or indeed normal unleaded.

Germans were ahead of the game and all the valve seats were hardened anyway so no worries with needing lead replacement stuff

I find mine runs best on Tesco Momentum99 and it's not as expensive as other brands SuperUnleaded.

They will run on normal unleaded but the timing needs to be retarded, super unleaded is better as I found the car runs better and has a little more performance.
I also found I used less fuel on super unleaded, perhaps because I had to drive it a little harder to get it going….. might just be all in my head but I'm happy with super unleaded….

Try running 110/130 av gas.....hold on.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

They don't need the lead,  but they need the high octane rating. Forget now but was the old leaded 4 or 5 star actually 100 octane rating.

4 star leaded petrol was 98RON, 2 star leaded petrol was 91RON which I can run my 1978 1.6 carb Mk1 Scirocco on so that's happy on normal unleaded fuel…

I can remember what 3 star was….

I can remember the sticker on my Rover 3500s, Minimum 105 Octane…. when I would treat it to a tank of 130 avgas….. VA va va va Varoooooooooom…..

Oh the oldie days of leaded paint, leaded gas, and bug killers that killed the bugs.
