Period correct wheels? 1990 clipper

Post

I've gotten a tad obsessed with getting my car to 100% original standard, this picture is from the 1990 catalogue on the forum I found, I've seen these wheels for sale, are they a rare wheel/hard to come by at all? Advert doesn't state if they are 13" or 14". I'm not sure what they are worth and they are about a 2 hour round trip to collect so was going to ask you guys what you'd pay for a full set? Just a rough estimate would be helpful! Anyone with a cabby of similar age know the oem wheel options?? Thanks image.png image.png

I think those are the 13" versions of steels that were also on the smaller engine mk2 Golfs of the same era - although without the outer 'ring' on the ones shown. Steel wise there was a 14" version as fitted to late lower spec mk2 GTIs and later mk2 Golf Driver models I think. Not 100% on the alloy options for the Clipper - I guess you could have ordered Scala ones or BBS from the dealer at the time?

From memory around that time they were offered with both of the above. (steels)

Alloys were a dealer option and mostly BBS.

I think Mike is right around that time Clippers changed over from the 13" to the 14". I think the later your car was registered in 1990 the more likely it was the 14" wheel.  This is when this style became a fitment on the Mk2 GTI.

CabrioAnna , I think you said that your Clipper came with the 14" wheels - when was yours registered, I know it's H reg.

I think Mike will agree that VW were always a bit hit and miss when specs changed, for example when the Clipper bodykit was launched for all Cabbys And featured in the brochures, they had a supply problem and continued to sell some without the kit on for several months having to put a dealer handout into the brochures to notify buyers.

Richard is correct on both counts.
Mine's a summer 1990 and it had 14" on it as standard and the owners manual states 13" or 14".
Yes from time to time over the years I was with VW there would be the odd occasion when the lines of communication would fail badly!  O_o

Thanks all the replies everyone! My car was registered feb 1990 so possibly 13"s then, I'm guessing the bbs option would be 14 inch RA's?

The set I'm interested in are within driving distance to me, they are complete trims aswell it seems like the trims are worth more than the wheels! Classic parts seems like a name your own price game when you can't get the bits anywhere else

While I'm waiting to collect my new summer alloys and tires for the Mk6 I'll let you into another little trade secret from the 80's.

Every Mk2 GTI that came in we would put a set of BBS on them during the de-waxing and prep process, so before potential buyers even saw them.   ;)

Then we would fit some used cars with those sets that came off the new GTI.  ;)

Or if someone wanted to upgrade their wheels to BBS they would often ask us how much are their old wheels and tires worth to us. To which we'd reply, "nothing to us but we will take them from you and not charge you for the fitting of the new wheels and tires.  ;)

8 out of 10 went for that!

Then we would sell them again on our lower spec used C's, CL's and Mk1's.  ;)

In my 5 and a 1/2 years selling them I can't remember a GTI Golf Mk1, Mk2 or Scirocco ever leaving our dealership without a set of BBS on them!

Good little profit center that.

So I collected the wheels today, really chuffed with them all complete with 4 good tyres and bolts, do the steel wheels still use radius seat bolts? Or tapered it came with radius bolts like mine but abit shorter for the steel
