Think it depends on what you're after.  I value my mk2 at 6-7k having spent at least that on it over the past 3 yrs.  My sportline i get all sort of people asking if for sale, yet no one thinks offers over 6k, so until im offered amount to make me think, then ill keep.

How much is mk2 rocco worth? even less that any golf inc mk5… yet far more rare and definitely get people looking.
Im more than happy seeing inflated prices, as it keeps the wife off my back when i claim cars are investments.

Campaign without MOT and not running right just made £20K. But it's on ebay so I'm expecting to see it on again soon. If anyone wants my magazine freatured GTi, I'll accept £19,000

That's tidy but £20k is a lump of cash to me.   As for the mk2 wanting £20k, It's a nice car but it's not special in anyway… he describes it as an investment … so to me that's makes it a £40k car in 10 years?  just can't see it.   If he got £10k for it now he's done well IMHO

Its possible in years to come, that the Mk2 GTI will be just as valuable as the Mk1 - the point being, that the Mk1 will lose its status of being rarer, more difficult to find in top condition, etc and the Mk2 values maturing. It is a slightly better car after all. I don't think the Mk3 will "get there" though because its just that bit heavier and more refined, which make it feel newer and more like a modern car, rather than the distinctly different feeling of a Mk1 (with no ABS, no power steering etc) which the Mk2 mostly held on to.

But no, not £20k. Its a waste of time trying to gauge values except from actual sales of cars.

Still some VW bargains, £500 '86 MK2 1.6 CL not MOTd or used used for 16 yrs but apart from a front wing looks like an recomission rather than weldathon resto.

I think the Mk2 Gti is a better car to drive and own than the Mk1….. yes I said it on a Mk1 Golf site but the couple I've owned have been great cars.

Now gone are the days of sub £1000 mk2 Gti's with 12 months MOT and tax for cheap motoring and the prices are going up.

The last Mk2 Golf I brought in 2009 for £650, sold it for £1200, 12 months later ( after a tidy up and good service) then it reappeared on ebay end last year for £4000 and sold…  O_o

Agree, it has been said the MK1 was the prototype and the MK2 is the definitive Golf

Shush don't tell everyone about Mk2 Scirocco as I keep my eyes open for another one to go with my Mk1 Scirocco and I wont be able to buy another one if the prices keep going up.   .

My brothers got a Mk2 Storm as well, with only ever 300 made in each colour they are even rarer but still only fetch small money compared to a Mk1 Golf..

When I was 20 years old and living at home my Dad drove a 1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS, my Mum drove a 1984 Mk2 Scirocco Storm (the one my brother now has) My brother also drove a 1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS (The one I now have) and I had a 1981 Mk1 Golf LD as insurance was cheap so as a family we've had a few Scirocco's

Yes the mk2 is the evolution of the mk1, and an 80s car,  we have to remember mk1 is a 70s car

Look on how many left and there a many many mk2 left. This will keep a lid on the prices for now.

This Scirocco GTi went for £3,800 I'd say at least 1/2 of the equivalent Golf
