Alternator Needed

Can anyone help me find an  alternator for my mk1 golf gti please?

Mine has died and the garage has asked my to supply them with one.

Thanks in advance

You may be able to get a better price on an exchange unit, but these guys do them new for not-silly money. https://www.startermotor-alternator-store.co.uk/vw-golf-16--18-83---92-alternator-a696-11019-p.asp

I've not used them, but they are on my list of potential suppliers for my project!

1st check with them what type of wiring loom it has, early have a 3 pin plug with 2 red wires and a blue, late have 2 studs on the alternator with 1 red wire and a blue

Try GSF mate. They usually have promos with up to 60% off which I get endless emails about. They charge a 24 quid surcharge which you get back when you take them your dud one back which (I think) then gets a refurb and is resold. Or you could always fit a new set of brushes which is what normally wears out.

What is the difference between the two designs. I believe it's to do with the regulator, but other than that I've no idea. Is it possible to convert from the plug to stud type - only asking because the stud based version appear to be more widely available for sensible money.

its just the connection style on the alternator, easy to convert either way you just fit the matching alternator cabling :)
