Mk1 caddy radiator help... I'm collecting them but non fit

Post

Can anyone help please. I have a 1.6 petrol caddy that I Ann rebuilding - I threw the old radiator away some time ago and bought a new one. It's to small, I bought one from eurocarparts using the reg number and it's to small. I'm thinking the previous owNet may have changed it for maybe a diesel one.

The cowling measures approx 585 across. Holes approx 550mm . It has a header tank so not top filled.

Does anyone know what model of golf I should be looking for a radiator please

There were 3 styles over the years.
The kind with the cap on the side,
The Capless ones on the early rabbit/golf/cabriolets that bolted down at the bottom and had the c clip at the top
The later Capless ones that were in the Cabriolet that had pin mounts at the bottom and the top was bolted via clamps.

In the early years of Golf ownership, I had an issue with my radiator as it was the bolted at the sides, and with the clips movement at the top it split the tanks loose at the sides… I then discovered that alas they had a non-a/c radiator in my car…..

I bought a Brass, and copper one for less than the dealer, it was for a/c diesels, and it never gave me a issue.

Now with that said there were 2 types of radiators for each car, a/c and non-a/c.

They make a totally Aluminum Radiator now for about the cost of the plastic/.aluminum ones.

If you go to EBAY, or over hear Radiator Doctor, or Radiator Express, they usually list the mount type, and the thickness of the core as well as the length on them.

I would think you should be able to find the Capped one
to fit.

Just measured mine (also a 1.6 petrol Caddy) and it's 665mm across the top, the finned area is about 90-100mm less, and it's 320mm deep if that helps.

if the metal shroud has 2 holes on the driver side with rubber flaps on it then you need a 1.8 8v one. gti or carb makes no odds. the gti one is thicker, but for a 1.6 you dont need anything special.

but then if you plan to pop a bigger engine in later go for the gti 8v one, mine is still cooling the 2.0 16v very well :)
