Can anyone tell me what the base list price was for a Mk1 back in 1974 and what they cost fully loaded back then? Many thanks! Zee
While Dano is checking this for you, can you please tell me what you mean by "fully loaded"? 🤔
What do you have in mind as extras back then were pretty limited to say the least. The more you can can tell us without giving away an official secrets will help! 😂👍

By fully loaded, I mean top of the range. I hear you when you say there weren't many optional extras, but was wondering what entry level and top of the range prices were back then? As I'm sure you're aware, good quality vehicles are going for an absolute bomb these days! Do you have any idea how many are still in existence?
Many thanks.

I've got a 74, I think there are a few 74's at least in the uk.
Wonder how many worldwide?
There appears to be about 10, on this website http://www.swallowtail.info/
It seems to have not been updated since 2005, i have emailed the website to see if its still operational but no reply so far.
I am guessing there must be less than 50 worldwide.
Mine is also a 2 door 1500, dont know if its S or LS basge is missing, (which does not appears as a model on the GB price list) but mine is a swedish car

I'm no 1974 expert far from it but I think there's a lot more then 50 worldwide. I'd even bet there's a lot more than that in Germany alone.
There's at least five of I'm aware of even here in Austria.
If in the first year the production run was say 1,000,000 being produced or assembled in 9 different plants worldwide and only 1% survive to this day. We'd have about 10,000 cars worldwide but I'm guessing we might be looking at a fair few less than that!
But this is all guess work. 👌

if I am getting this right they seemed to change the 300 to 301 cycle every month, or later if they got over 9999 cars made it when up one. So 19 x 10,000 is 190,000 less a few for early months where they did not make 10,000 a month so I think about 175,000. 1% left 1750?
Where did you see the info they had 9 plants running from the start of production?

Hi Keith, I'd hoped to have clarified in my post that I'm not a Golf 1974 expert and it was mostly guess work from the internet.
As I've lived in Austria for the last 23 years I can read enough German to pick out little tip bits of information from their websites and there are so many.
I worked for VW/Audi from early 1983 to late 1988 as a salesman. Not that it counts for much!
The lastest info I was able to pick up was the we're building 2,000 Golf's per day back then.
Which would give us about 730,000 for the year.
Now my reference to other locations which I mentioned in my post started to happen in the 4th quarter of 74 when I used the word 'Assembled'. Again this information can't be proven but VW were shipping cars from that production run to other locations partly built and had the finished off on site. Remember there sole aim was to shift as much metal as possible out the door and do whatever it takes. (Still is to this day)
The disappointing fact is there is no definitive answer so we all end up playing Sherlock Holmes!
Maybe Keith as you seem to know a great deal you could write an historical article for the club and we could publish it on our website!

As you said we are all playing Sherlock and trying to bring a few more clues to the table.
If some cars were being assembled abroad, I wonder if they all left german with a chassis number? I would guess so as this was what happened with aircooled vw's since the 50's

You know the funny this is Keith that for every piece of information you find on the internet if you keep digging you'll soon come up with two or three more comments to contradict the first one.
I'm finding this especially difficult with my Golf Mk6, Highline, DSG, Tiptronic 7speed, estate fully loaded from the factory.
It's becoming a nightmare because most forums have never heard of this spec and once they here about the racing extras the original owner had fitted you can hear their minds spinning as to why would someone spend so much money on a Golf estate?
It confuses the heck out of the Mk6 owners club which like us is worldwide!
I spend more time proving what I have then I ever do getting any answer to my questions.
Back to the 1974 model issue and I have nothing to back this up but my gut feeling is there's a lot more out there than we think!
