Historic (classic) vehicles: MOT and vehicle tax: Eligibility - GOV.UK

from your build thread i can can see its not on original supplied engine,  so depending on MOT or log book, then the rules say it should be classed as the newest major part.

As for MOT unless your competent at mechanical work and confident that you have rectified faults when occur then its up to you to decide whether to take it for test. Ive said before and will say again, get it checked over by independant garage, and if god forbid you have accident then you can prove the car is maintained and road worthy. There's enough junk on the road that's 10yrs old nevermind 40.

It will be fine then - the engine needs to be "alternative original equipment" or "alternative cubic capacity of the same basic engine" (or the original one).

There's a bunch of other non-engine rules too.

In my mind, 16V engine was not okay but 2.0 8V would be okay; and obviously anything the Mk1 came with originally eg 1.8 8V would be fine too. But then its all rendered moot because you can self-declare!

You can apply for road tax exemption - change the tax class to "historic."

Same for mot exemption if you declare it un-modified.

As Kenneth says, Best bet is to carry on with an mot test each year - at least then you have proof of 'roadworthiness' if anything bad happened.
