High Clutch issue

Post

I took my car into the garage for some work the other day and the mechanic moved the car onto the ramp and advised me I needed a new clutch. I haven't driven it much. 4 days in the last 10 months but will be driving it a lot more now I am back in the same country as the car. long story short the Clutch releases towards the very top of the peddle. Its a new cable there is a bulkhead plate, the cable doesnt seem to be very adjustable but will look into this a bit more. there is no slipping, no grinding and it selects every gear perfect apart from 1st if I am doing over 5mph.

Any help or opinions appreciated, I have bought a new clutch but am reluctant to fit it if there could be another issue or non at all and I am happy to leave it on the shelf in my container never to be used.

High Clutch issue

Sounds like a worn clutch to me. May have a 100 miles left in or 1000 miles but either way it will need doing if not using much I would leave it until you have the funds.

Before going down the road to the obvious by replacing the clutch a couple of questions that you might want to answer.

How was the clutch operation before the new cable?
Did it behave as it does now?
Do you happen to know what sort of mileage the clutch has done?

The reason I ask is because a few years ago I needed a new clutch cable while mine was at VW for something else and the plonkers fitted the wrong cable which was to short and with no adjustment and I had the same symptoms as yours!

I'm not saying don't replace it but I think it's worth spending a few minutes thinking about other possibilities.

I'm sure your garage workshop is telling you the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
As with my VW service manager when he tried to convince me that they had fitted the right one.

Once I'd purchased the right one you could see there's was a full 8 inches shorter!

You can adjust the clutch cable, there is a big plastic nut on the gearbox end and a locking nut to stop it moving.

You should have about 10mm of free play at the top of the pedal? (pedal moves easily before starting to feel as if any thing is happening)

Normal for the biting point to be some where near the top so I would not worry about it just yet as it's not slipping etc…

Don't go into 1st gear when moving, you should stop and then engage 1st as it's not good for the gear box, 2nd gear will pull the car from a near stand still.

Nice one Mark I forgot to mention you're not supposed to go into 1st whilst on the move, forwards or backwards! 😉

The box just isn't designed to be doing that. 👍🏼

First of apologies to the admin for posting this thread in the wrong section.

I have driven the car a little more today and yes it will not go into gear when moving, only as I come to a stop which is good.

I have the new clutch on order as a just in case. I don't know how easy it would be to get one quick to Mallorca.

From memory it was ever so slightly higher on the bight before the cable was swapped,
The performance is very similar not too hard to depress, we swapped it out as a cheaper and quicker way to see if we could make lower.

Interesting to hear about your issue, with the length. I had a quick look yesterday in the rain and noticed the plastic nut, just need to get back to work where I can get my tools and have a look at it a little bit more.
