Have BBS RS and RM split rim wheels hit their ceiling price?

Post

.....or gone beyond?

I'm keen to put a set of BBS RS or RM wheels on my mk1 GTI but the price gap between what's being asked and what they're selling for seems a bit crazy. I've looked back at sold prices on eBay and a really nice set of 15" 4x100 RS complete with centre caps sold very recently for less than £900 and a set of RM's without caps went for £490. Are a set of RS 15" wheels that are in need of a comprehensive referb really worth £1500? Am I missing something?

Depends how much you want to spend to look like most others.

Good rs's I'd pay a grand for.
Good rm's I'd pay 750.

Others would pay more, advertise high and you can always drop…

You want a lovely set of rare impuls is what you need…. nobody else will have a set on a Mk1….. oh hang on, I have a set for sale. :) ;)

A kind offer but I'm stuck with a BBS RS fixaction at the minute! Yeah, that's what I'd have thought to be the right kinda price.

Rs's are lovely, I've never owned a set, I'm too poor.

Also it depends massively on what they've been constructed with, big wide radinox dishes don't come cheap.. neither do new barrels.

Exactly this!

Why, why oh why!

I had a big rant but it disappeared. So suffice to say buy something different instead. Please!

Yep, I think I'm swaying in that direction. A G60 would make far more sense!

I paid 450 for some rm's in 2012, 7's and 8's, stainless dishes, gold bolts.

Sold them less than a year later for 750.

There are bargains out there still tho for sure… I can't find them.

Maybe it’s me but it’s just a variation of bbs wheel why the $$$$. I prefer ats over these or indeed maybe my own multispokes.

Maybe I just don’t get it and when i do then I will want split rim bbs.

I have a set of 4 bbs sat for the garden holding down the weed covering. Not split rim or anything and need a refurb but I don’t see these as 700 wheels. I am keeping them and will have them refurbished for a change from the grey as and when the mood takes me but what is the advantage of split rims over these single piece vw originals I simply don’t know a reason for it other than looks on a road car or is there on. Thx

Trying to answer the question.
I don't ever forsee the increase in the prices stopping as with the cost of the cars.

Whether it be high end wheels or any other part.
Clearly it's not just Mk1's but all classic cars.

I think if you were to look back at today's prices in say 20 years time you'll be saying oh God they were cheap back then.
In much the same way as when we think of how much Mk1's were 20 years ago for example! ;)

Mine are Vw split rims. I agree the prices are silly high, non splits are less desirable.

I suppose the one thing with splits are that you can customise them to your own taste etc

Again some prices are silly high but hey look on bright side doesn’t mean you’re loosing money but possibly making money as the prices go up

Hmmm, i'm looking for a set of RS in either 15 or 16".
Prices seem to be all over the place and depend on the condition/finish.

I'd prefer a set that can be split and refurbed to my spec….but some of the sets I've seen go for £1000 needing repair/refurb.

On the other hand, I've seen sets already refurbed (15s) for up to £2000!! (new bolts, all parts repainted, new dishes or polished originals).

The BBS 15" RS I bought for my 76 set me back £1600 back in 2010 - so the way I see it, decent sets will always command higher money and they seem to be creeping up!!

Great if you have a set for sale (in great condition), not so - if you're looking for a good built set!

Reality for me is that I'm just not fancy enough for fancy wheels… I've owned some lovely wheels, I never keep them….. usually because I need the money…

Ultimately I'm just a steel wheel man, and a battered set at that… Roach, know your limits!!

I have a set on my Rocco which I plan to sell.  The rims are in good shape, the rears have a wider dish.  The car has been in storage for 12 years and the tyres need replacing as they are old.  The rims need a good clean a polish, the bolts have surface rust.

I haven't cleaned them as new owner will probably split them an rebuild.

I'm looking for £650 or a part exchange for some Snowflakes, G60's or RA's to go back on the Rocco.
