DX cylinder head skim / port / gas flow cost?

Post

Guys I've got a slight weep of oil from the rear of my cylinder head which I wasn't overly surprised about as low mileage engines and knacked head gaskets seem to go hand in hand in my experience.

Im hoping it'll last for this season but I quite like the idea of getting a replacement head, having it ported, polished, skimmed and fully rebuilt ready to swap straight over when the time comes or next winter.

I've got to confess I have no idea of cost of these things and TSR's website doesnt tell me anything (although I'm sure the company has been sold since its glory days anyway)

I may as well go the whole hog and have the inlet polished as ported to accept an audi 2.2 throttle body

Mk2 16v WUR and a mild cam would be nice as well, be nice to see 130bhp

I dont know of any reputable engine builders or tuners in my area (kent) apart from Bill Richards racing although he normally specialises in minis

Anyone point me in the right direction or give me ball park prices

Sorry can't help with cost but you are right about TSR, Tim Styles retired to France years ago, both me and brother used them for advice and services "back in the day" but last time I use them to change my fuel injectors and set the car up on the rolling road about 10 years ago I would not go back and use them again, they did not set the car up right as I was getting "pinking" when driving, they tried to charge me for a new fuel filter even though I had replaced it 2 days before taking it in and told them it was new when I dropped the car off and the rolling road print out was not working so they could not give me the paper work…. I guess it did not see the rolling road…
This is why I try avoid going to garages as most don't seem to do a good job..

I've read their refurbished heads are poorly done with some head having metal swarf left in channels and poor porting.

It might be different now and others might say they do a good job…

There's one man to talk to, Mr Dave Crissel of Allstage Cylinder Heads. Proper old school Golf tuner, check out the head he's just done for me in my build thread. I had a spare head sent to him for full refurb (light skim, fully cleaned and inspected, stage 2 port/polish and fitted the new Schrick 276 cam I supplied which was re-shimmed to correct tappet clearances. Also new std valves and springs, new guides and stem oil seals.) He also port matched my inlet manifold for the Audi 2.2 throttle body.  My advice is to call him and discuss your requirements.

Sounds like you've just had everything I'm looking to have done.

Did you get any rolling road figures afterwards, how does it drive now?

Jesus! ! I've just read your build thread.
I now feel very inadequate.
Forget my question about how the car now drives!

I have found the contact details so will give him a call

Don't feel so inadequate, it still hasn't been driven and is a while away yet!  If anyone is inadequate, it's me for not getting the bloody thing finished yet.
