Rear Fog & Mudflaps

Hi All,
Wondered if anyone can put me right on a couple of items for my 1982 Mk1 Golf 1.8 GLi
It has always had a rear red fog light fitted underslung of the rear, also does anyone know if my particular model was issued with mudflaps fitted?
Minor issues but just wanted to clear it up.
Cheers

You don't have to have a fog light underneath, you can sacrifice a reversing light, minimal but of wiring and a red bulb and you can have it housed in the rear cluster

Sure its meant to be bolted on as an afterthought underneath to be original but if original looks worse…..

Not 100% sure but I think the fog lamps were fitted by the dealers at the time, so there's no single one which is "right" for the Mk1 Golf. And they tended to last about 10 years which means its probably an aftermarket replacement anyway.

Interestingly, there is a minimum height requirement of 250mm in the legislation, I bet a few Mk1 Golf convertibles' rear foglamps would fail this.

Mudflaps were never standard equipment and rarely seen on Mk1 Golfs.

Those rear lamp lenses look weird, they certainly don't look like the all-red (US) or red/amber (as found on early Mk1 Golfs with no reversing lamps). Is it a photoshop?

paul_c they do look weird you're right
I couldn't find any all red rears and couldn't justify the price of Posties so this was my first attempt at red tinting.

They've been redone since and look a lot more red and less like lego but in fairness the sunlight isn't doing them any favours

Many thanks for the heads up. My Fog isn't working so I may remove it altogether.

It's an MOT fail if you don't have a fog light, it's only car built before 1980 which can be on the UK roads without a fog light…

Which is exactly why swallowtails have the lights they have because they didn't need to incorporate a fog light unlike the S2s
Im quite pleased they stuck with the S1 lights for the Cabriolet though to be honest

The boot hole is small enough in a cabriolet… can you imagine the size of the hole if cabriolet had the tin top series 2 rear lights..

You could do the trick of replacing the right lens with a red/amber BUT they're not readily available and you'll probably spend £100+ trying to get one from USA or something.

Personally I think its a compromise, because although it could be said to neaten up the rear end, the lenses then won't look symmetric and you'll lose a reversing lamp.

I think partly the reason S1s had a smaller lens was at the time, not all countries needed a rear fog lamp so it was okay to fit an additional one for the places it was needed. I'd not fancy driving without a rear fog in foggy weather though.

You can just use a multi red LED bulb behind the white reverse light so keep the clusters original

There has always been one argument against their necessity and that is of they are so vital why don't motorcycles have them fitted?

Doesn't really matter if its necessary or not, its an MoT requirement so you'd just end up with egg on your face (or a dodgy MoT) without it.
