Could you buy a non-Campaign 1.8 GTi at the same time as a Campaign 1.8 GTi

As a Campaign owner I am very interested in the history of this model.

I completely understand that the Campaign was a standard 1.8 GTi with "extras".

My question is could you buy a non-Campaign 1.8 GTi at the same time as a Campaign 1.8 GTi.

The Campaign went on sale at the very end of the Golf 1 production run in August/September 1983.

I have seen a VW price list from February 1983 that just lists the 1.8 GTi.  In July 1983 the "Special GTi" (Campaign) brochure was launched.

Does anyone have a price list from the later part of 1983 showing the Golf range that was sale?

There are certainly a few A reg  standard GTIs about which will have been delivered at the same time as the Campaign from August 83, as to if they were just earlier orders delivered late or held off by owners for the later registration I am not sure.  Just to confuse matters a bit more there were quite a few personal imports coming in at the time, especially armed forces cars which were mostly Standard Spec.

Thanks for that Richard.

It would be nice to see a VW price list showing the Golf range for the later part of 1983 to see if you could order a non-Campaign GTi from August 1983 on.

From my campaigns history I've found this for you.
Feb 83 price list standard 1800 GTI basic price was £5465.
I have a typed quote but not dated stating the Campaign base price to be £5578.
On another piece of paper we're the comparisons in finance between the 2 models which indicated to me there were two differing prices at the same time.  There probably wasn't an official printed price list for a campaign post August 83 as the mk2 was on its way? Can't vouch for the accuracy of the figures quoted, but makes for interesting reading -

If you look at the 1982 and 1983 statistics they suggest you could have bought and registered either a 1.6 or a 1.8 GTI.

The 1984 table seems to suggest all 1.6's must have gone by then, but the 1.8 soldiered on into 1985 when a single (last?) one was sold… love to know where that is now!

I'd imagine the same situation applied to some degree with Campaign and non-Campaign models, there would likely be a residue of the standard 1.8 stock sold simultaneously with final Campaign models.

If you're instead asking was the standard 1.8 'produced' in the factory along side the Campaign (at least for UK purchase) then it's not so clear.

I'm going to guess not… I always thought that was the rational behind run-out models, they were end of production vehicles loaded with extras and/or discounted to tempt enough buyers to purchase the final cars rather than wait for the replacement MK2 model, to have kept making the standard 1.8 would've defeated the whole point of the Campaign.

Thanks very much Yomp for your detailed answer and taking the time to attach those images.  Your pre-order quote does appear to be dated - bottom right 5.9.83  Amazing you have that info still!

I wonder what other "goodies" /information you have relating to the Campaign model.  As a very proud Campaign owner I am really interested in the models history, having just paid silly money for the original VW "Special GTi" brochure…..  Any other paperwork you have would be really interesting to see.

So it does appear that at least for a time you could have a Campaign or "normal" GTi 1.8  Using up the stock I guess.

I agree that it is unlikely that the Campaign ever appeared on the official VW price list.

I wonder if anyone has a copy of the VW price list that followed the 1 February 1983 one??

Thanks once again….. people like you make it such a joy to be a member of this great club!  Happy Christmas.

…  and thanks to you too bacardincoke.

I also have that book and have also wondered at the accuracy of those production numbers.  As you say where is that 1985 1.8 now I wonder…. if it isn't an error in the book.  I guess we will never know. ……..

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

Happy Christmas!

This was the article that made the original owner of mine buy a Campaign as opposed to the up coming mk2 839E2547-2261-4410-A076-0ED8641EF205.jpeg
