Hi All, A very kind mate of mine is letting me use his garage and a ramp next week to do a winter service on the standard engine 1980 1.6. I have planned to fit my new timing belt, gear linkage bushes (while on the ramp), oil and filter, plugs, fresh antifreeze, air filter, (maybe a stainless 4 branch - depending on time), new plugs, fuel filter?, Might buy a piperX exhaust or similar on the credit card and not tell the wife also  and add this to the 4 branch while I am at it……
So have a Mann Oil Filter, febi timing belt, standard air filter, linkage kit, 4 branch already in the garage. Need to decide on;

What Oil - Thinking Semi Synth 10W40 maybe GTX but open on this to input.
What Plugs - Bosch? the triple electrode ones or just normal???
Fuel Filter - Is there a particualy good one?
Water Pump - Should i just change it anyway while there - What make and where from?
Antifreeze - Normal blue Glycol from Eurocar Parts or GSF.

NOTE - I don't have bottomless pockets so need to think on price of the more costly parts like the pump. (excluding cheeky exhaust haha)

Thinking is to role out at the end of the day with clean Oil, clean air, clean water and clean fuel linked to secure timing and alternator belts - Will be a busy day as I haven't done detailed service work for several years so thinking time will explode my brain……

Some thoughts before my shopping trip on the weekend would be good also if anyone has an exhaust recommendation to keep the raspy 1.6 sound but open a couple of horses up then that would be good - remember don't tell the wife….

Is your car fuel injection or carb?

Don't bother changing the water pump unless it's noisy or faulty, it's fixed to the front of the engine so is easy to change when ever you need to.

Stuff I've been using for years.

Anti freeze, change every 2 to 3 years, ready mixed and 5l is plenty.

Fuel filter.. Depends on carb or fuel injection, also 2 types of fuel injection filters…

What type of fitment do you have on the dissy cap, ht leads as 2 different ways which the leads fit,
later type have a pin in the middle on the dissy cap cap.
Early type no pin.

New alternator belt, 950x10 is what you need, showing out of stock….

4 to 1 manifold can be time consuming to fit as you can have problems removing the old nuts from the exhaust manifold, always fit new nuts, special copper nuts needed.

You may need to remove the front anti roll bar to get the new manifold on.

You will need to wrap/protect the rubber boot on the steering UJ joint as it will be close to the exhaust down pipe, I used a plumbers mat on mine.

Wrap it around the rubber boot and some cable ties to hold it in place.

I also wrapped my manifold to keep the heat down underneath the bonnet.

Great tip on the plumbers mat. As it will be on a wheel free ramp the definitely the time to fit it as side of the road on axle stands just is not the same. It is a 1.6 GTI by the way. Manifold is wrapped already. Good tip on manifold buts would have forgot these and now I am removing the antiroll bar may some poly bushes whilst it is off as currently on coil overs anyway. Thanks for all the links a great help.

Look for ones with Metal Impeller.

If you haven't changed out the WP before and never-seized the bolts, then I would go for a housing/pump together.  Just make sure that you remove the bolts from the housing one at a time and coat with never-seize, then return and torque to 87 in/lbs, this way in the future you will never need to worry about a housing/pump combo again….  Nothing like shearing a bolt off as you try to take it apart.

If you have access to a electric or air impact then that is a help in getting those bolts out without breaking…and shoot your favorite penetrant oil from the back and front and allow it to work for about 20 minutes before trying to separate the pump from the housing.  I would also do a new t-stat at the same time and drill a 1/16 to 1/8 hole in the lip of the t-stat to assist with no air bubble and filling the system back.

Hole in lip

Forgot the sump plug washer, fit a new one each time you change the oil so worth ordering a few to keep for next time….

Ok team let's see if we can get a tools list together. I don't want to lug the whole tool box to the workshop. I am doing cam belt and alternator belt antifreeze, oil, spark plugs dizzy cap. Air and fuel filter. I shall borrow tools for exhaust manifold as may run out of time. So I reckon I need

Flat head driver
Pozi drive
1/4 inch ratchet set 4-13mm
1/2 inch ratchet with 19,17 and 13mm
Tipped for timing marks
Spammers 7,8,10,13,17 and 19mm
Filter wrench - borrow one
Plug socket and extension 1/2" drive. 14mm??
There is a load of tools there obviously but don't want to be a pain in the ass and take the p1ss out of being loaned a ramp for a morning.

You need a tool to tension the cam belt, there is 2 holes in the tensioner and I use some cir clip pliers, the 90 degree bent ones.

I use a cheapo set like this…

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-IN-1-CIRCLIP-PLIER-SNAP-RING-PLIERS-CIR-CLIP-INTERNAL-EXTERNAL-CAR-VAN-TRUCK/190980185745?hash=item2c774e5e91:g:XNIAAOSwfVpYoIcP

Allen keys to undo the top metal cambelt cover and the bolts on the water pump pulley and crank pulley. Stick the car in 1st gear and loosen these bolts before removing the alternator belt as they help stopping things turning when trying to undo them.

Have you got some new washers for the fuel filter if the car is fuel injection?? (does not mater if carb car as different filter)

Thanks mark. Borrowed only about 5 tools including the Allen keys . So managed to drive oil and 3 filters. But when doing the cam belt noticed an oil leak and had to get an intermediate shaft seal and fit so a disorganised day. But all done and I feel smug and safe I the fact it is fluid and filter services timed and spark plugs. Yeah

What's that holding on the cam belt tensioner?
That is not right…. you can buy a new stud as should still be available from a dealer?
fit tensioner then a washer and nut…

should look like this, 3rd. Pic down.

You don’t want what ever is fitted to shear off from the head or it’s broken engine time……
