Deep subject,

I can only guide you through your experience.

The 55A was standard over here on the Diesels without a/c.

The 65A was standard over here on the Diesels with a/c

There are a wide variety of choices, 45,55,65  I have a 90A on my Cabriolet.

Some automotive electrical shops can rebuild yours to up the Amps.

I would say the 65 would do your fine, and that if you want to run a large sub-amp and things you may want to up the amperage.

I will tell you that one thing that you want to keep in mind are the condition of your battery to Alternator cable, as well as your Battery Neg to frame and frame to engine cable.

So if you are going to upgrade may I suggest that you replace the battery to frame and frame to engine grounds.

Relaying the Headlights is another great things to do.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Depending on year and engine spec, anything from a 45 amp to a 95amp.

65 amp was probably the original spec for an 83 GTi.

I'd suggest upping it if you're replacing it as why not? They cost similar amounts and you'll always have a full battery, especially if you do shorter trips and lots of stopping and starting.
