Wet lower a pillar - Help

Post

So went into golf today to pull the bonnet and remove the thermostat.

The carpet by the bonnet pull and all the carpet on that side was wet.

My car is outside unfortunately and I have a car cover in it so a bit confused. Checked the scuttle and this is dry with clear drains although with the slope of the drive would leave water in the scuttle.

Is the a common place to look as all sound deadening in the scuttle and don’t want to hack it out for the sake of it but need to fix to save both the fuse box and dreaded rust.

Thanks.

Check for any holes along the scuttle area, get some kitchen towel and roll it up and push it in the inner corners of the windscreen by the top of the dash to see if water is getting in via the windscreen seal.

Don’t mention the heater matrix you will jinx me haha. One rule about heater matrix - don’t speak about heater matrix.

I thought that also but the wet is too high on the a pillar and not all across the footwell so hopefully not.

I put the screw in myself after the respray so could be that if I f’d it up. May be a warm day job with the carpet pulled back and a hose pipe running over the car. Keep the ideas coming though as I hate looking for water leaks.

Wet lower a pillar - Help

Don’t, I once had a torrent of water cascading into the passenger footwell like someone had emptied a bucket ! Turns out the rubber drains under the scuttle had become blocked so after a heavy rain when I pulled up and out of my rather steep driveway the whole lot poured in as I just watched in disbelief and horror.
After a frantic carpet removal, a wet vac and some extensive counselling I can  now talk about it but it will stay with me forever lol

Hood Vents, Debris Guards are a must.
Clean rain Drains are a must.

Check the windscreen gaskets for leaks and ill fitting.

Check door fitment, and rubber grommets for proper fitment.

Another thing is that if you have a/c, then check the floor drain.

is it a tintop? could be the sunroof drain pipe if it has one.

heater matrix is easy in a golf, you should try an audi 80, its common for them to go and you have to remove the whole dash to replace it. you would notice the coolant loss if its the matrix though

Wet carpets could be from a leak literally years ago, once soaked sound deadening will never dry out unless removed.

As above check the bulkhead drains aren't blocked, rain tray is present and correct. Another one to watch for is if the aerial wire is routed via the drain tubes water can follow it in to the cabin and drip onto the fuse board and carpet.

One both MK1 and 2s I have run the windscreen seal is almost useless. Shove kitchen roll down between the dash top and window, esp the corners and see if it gets wet when it rain.

Kitchen roll as in "Paper Towels?"

Ariel is that there needs to be a drip loop installed this prevents direct water migration into the inner frame.

So no Ariel on the car removed that and the carpets were dry as I removed them last Easter when fully resprayed. My guess is the steep slope of the drive and wet has got in when the cover blew off previously and now I am noticing it. Will get the water pump back on and thermostats (original job I went to do) and then will get it in a local paint booth for a little bit of vitamin D and warmth before attacking it with tissue paper and a hose pipe.

If I ever find it I shall let you know could be a few weeks though as running round with work a lot.
