Retro fitting headrests to a rear seat?

Post

Hello all!

Recently bought a MK1 golf, and was wondering how easy it is to add headrests to the rear seat of a MK1 golf - aware it may need new supports adding, how easy would it be to strip the seat down to the frame, weld in new metal supports for the headrests, then reassemble the lot?

I've got some spare front headrests, hopefully they'll fit if I manage to add the support bars for them.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah I thought about doing this myself also. Saw a nice black sport line one that a guy had done himself too. Headrests in the backseat Looks good. Haven’t got round to stripping my back seats yet, but will be happening soon as part of my restoration. When I strip them down, I’ll let you know what’s in there and if I go ahead with it or not.

Finally had a go at doing it, wasn't too hard a job. Had to drill some holes, make a mounting box to reinforce it but got some headrests in the back at last!

Good job, Looks Good! You have any top tips? I havent done mine, yet. I've just sound proofed and got the wiring back in mine. Have few more things to finish off the exterior (paint the clipper kit etc) and fix the dash before i move on to the interior seats etc.

I was away to ask about the rear arm rests and door handles on the door cards……….. but then realized, yours must be 4-door tin top right? Mines is a cabriolet and doesnt have those on the cards. Threw me off for a minute there lol.

Yeah, it's a four door tin top! Only tips I'd have relate to the four door fortunately, mostly had issues with having to cut the backing board that goes on the back of the seat around the headrest mounts.

Also the rear parcel shelf screws had to be moved as the existing screw holes now lined up with the headrest mounts.

Oh one last thing, the new mounts are flush with the outside of the seat back frame, so the cardboard clips that hold the seat cover on had to be cut and glued on to stick in places.

Otherwise, no real problems! I hope yours are easy to fit as well!
