The MK1 market

What's the Mk1 market like? Do you think we are trundling along in appreciating assets? 

seems the general classics market is still on the rise. 

The only way is up!
When has there been any other way in our market place?
Name one?

When the super car market bombed and took a massive correction (quite rightly) our market on things like GTI's jumped.

Go figure?

I think mk1's have been fairly stagnant compared to some other desirable classics, yes prices of mk1s have been and will keep rising but not like what 205's e30's and old fast fords have in the last few years.

 I think as the mk1s have had the cult car status for longer than other cars of the same period they had a head start on price rises, but also meant a lot were kept instead of being scrapped.

 This combined with so many being sold and how well made they are means they are more mk1's to choose from, how many old chevettes, fiestas or talbots are still about? id would guess there are more mk1's than these combined.

Well if I only go by the game we play here called GAP.
We had our first season back in 2013 and we've just last month finished season 4.

But we missed out last year because I was seriously ill.
So we played again this year and at least 20 of the 28 players had played before.

Now don't take my word for it but that 20 to a man or woman will tell you there was a considerable price jump from the 2014 /2015 and this 2017/2018.

If I had to really stick my neck out I would say that the crazy prices we've seen GTI's offered for will stagnate as people realize that these cars keep on coming up for sale in different places because people just won't pay the price.

I'm currently looking at a fully restored Mk1 and it's €14,000 I for the first time and last time in my life spending that sort of money for on because it is museum perfect and I could use it for marketing purposes for other businesses European wide.

I am willing to put my money where my big mouth is but only when I'm a 110% sure.

The deal is not yet done because I have to drive to Hungary next week to view it, back in a mo!

Right then I don't want to give away to much yet because there's a lot between me and owning this one but I'm going to do my best to get it.










Oh and I said just 3 photos but I have so many.
Now as a hobby for the past 8 years I've studied the Mk1 market in Europe so although I wouldn't say I'm an expert but the prices of the cars and the spares will continue to rise at a steady pace.

But as with everything it's linked to the economy and spare income.
But the Golf mk1 is now 44 years old.

Now if I was forced to make a prediction as I witnessed with the car in the run up to the not so big 40 now 44.
But at 47/8 years old there will again be a massive hike in prices lasting through until it's 51.

But of course the target number is 50.

As for the golf above it is every nut and bolt restoration, look at the workshop. It's cleaner and better organized than our apartment and my Austrian wife is a bit of a perfectionist!

That was just a sample of photos but in 8 years of following the Mk1 market for prices and what you get for your hard earned pounds I've never seen a Mk1 even close to this with one exception maybe. It's my hobby following the market trends, prices etc…

But this is something else, simple as that.
It's a completely different league even to most 'Concourse' cars I've seen and I've seen a few.

Don't know yet if I can use my knowledge and years of experience as a VW/Audi car salesman but I will think about it over the weekend and maybe call on Monday.

There can't be many buyers in the market right now but if someone beats to it so be it.

I'm a very firm believer in "if it's not meant to be then it's not meant to be." I'll happily walk away and no hard feelings or if only, that's just not me!

Sounds like your head is on straight to me, Mike!

As an owner of a green Series 1… I've never seen an example so perfect. It is very comparable with press photos from the era!

Even if you choose to walkaway from this one, I (and I am sure many others) appreciate you posting these pictures to prove such an example existed!

Well I'm seriously thinking it over but at the moment I've more questions than answers!

Might have to go and see it next week if it's still there, if it sells before then at least I was right,  it is that special!

It's stealing the show a bit from the original question but here's a bit more for you to get excited about.

Haven’t read the whole thread but looks amazing. Question is would you drive it?  Every stone that hits the underside would make you wince.

I’m very impressed with the spanner rack on the wall though. Which I had a garage like that.

Hi Ian, no I would trailer it around and rent it out for promotions, events and shows that sort of stuff.
To get some of the cost back, well that's the idea floating around in my head.

My Mk6 is powerful enough and its got a factory fitted towbar so no problem there!

That sounds the definition of owning artwork not a car.

But I get it. If you can afford the indulgence and could part with it again one day in day ten years then maybe an investment.

It might need a hot water bottle and electric blanket where you are though during the winter months.

Well funny you mention that but I showed it to my dear wife and told her my ideas for the car and she didn't over react for a change.

She likes the look of the car and admits she doesn't know what she's looking at.

But now I've been forced to retire due to my health she wants me to find something to do so I don't become a couch potato!

So far so good

Great Golf Mike. Sorry you have had to pull out of work buddy.

That is identical to the very first Golf I saw, my friends dad bought it in 1974 to replace his MK1 Escort. I would stick it in a garage with a mirrored floor, comfy chair & beer fridge.

That's a beaut!

Is it a 76? What colour is it? Too many doors for me, but it's an absolute killer car!
