Its quite a common issue and its a while since I've done one.
There's a guide link below, but from memory I fixed whilst seat in the car and poss used the old cable to pull a new wire through. As above you can repair the existing cable or I've used welding or electrical wire before that was around for free

Another fix is use a bit of wire to lift the catch out the way if it's only 1 side broken, mine been like this for a few years and not problem MOT time.

Hi
My cable snapped a couple of months ago.
I followed the quick link guide as noted by Early-1800 which was very helpful. I found that someone had already used 2 x electrical connectors (as Kenneth has mentioned) and a bit of wire to join the snapped length together. one of these connectors had come loose, so i just retightened the connectors and left well alone.
I have owned the car for over 10 years before the wire gave way so obviously its a quick fix that can last for a good while.

Thanks for replies,I have owned the car since 1996.
I have got some ideas.
One problem is while at garage they pulled the cable off so I do not know where the top part is to join.
Some of the diagrams are good but if anyone one has it I would like to know the way the cable goes from the top to bottom middle.
