Scuttle bay sealing

Post

So ordinarily my scuttle tray would not leak into the car but the drive is very steep incline and I can only reverse down it as the car is too low to make it over the hump forwards.

Discovered with all the rain that the near side carpet is soaking and will be pulling up to dry out on the weekend.

But need to seal the whole scuttle bay on the near side and when I look in only see sound proof sheet and the drain (high is totally clear).

Are there any obvious leak points I can focus on to turn the scuttle bay from a sieve to a fish tank and keep the inside dry?

I assume there are some cable ways or maybe seams in there somewhere I can focus on.

Any tips welcome before I hack the sound proofing out and get busy with seam seal and a rattle can.

Make sure that your rain drains are clear. then any Grommet or wire through gets looked at.
The Air Blower should be sealed tight.

What I would do is to shine a strong light in the scuttle, then look for light from the inside. Then plug those light leaks.

Scuttle bay sealing

I had a quick look and the only thing that came to mind could be the air intake for the fan maybe. I assume it has some sort of seal that may have perished over time .

This is a picture taken under the think black plastic rain cover in the middle of the scuttle.

There is a seam where the scuttle is spot welded into position that can be seen from inside the scuttle tray area. Over time time this area seems to crack.

I've had leaks from this area on both tin top and cabby.

A small bead of tiger seal or something similar will help seal it up.

As Briano says the other point of easy ingress is where the fan mounts. Again some tiger seal will help solve this problem. Just pray you don't need to get it out again! Alternatively loosen the fan motor in the scuttle, remove it and use some butyl sealing strip under it and re-insert.

I have just found why the passenger footwell was getting wet on my tintop with factory sunroof, It stayed dry if I washed it but was wet after a drive in the rain. It turned out that my sunroof drain tube on the passenger side was no longer poking through the hole in the A-pillar and the water was dripping down inside the a piller and running down the inside of the carpet trim on the inside of the A-pillar and running straight under the carpet. Mine has been repaired on the nearside front inner sill etc and I thought it was leaking through the seam sealer. I removed the seam sealer and resealed it but it made no difference. If you have a factory sunroof then check the drain tubes and pour water from a jug into the drain tube to make sure it comes out on the outside only.
May not be your problem but worth checking!
Hope you get it sorted.

Had that happen to me, forgot about it until you mentioned sunroof….. In my case it was a Rodeo.  I cleaned the Drains with Brake Clean Till it ran out clear, problem solved.

In my case as the Daughter was driving on Cow Drenching rain, it would bubble in to the cabin over the seal….and wet her clothes.

Scuttle bay sealing

Ok so sort of good news. No factory sun roof for me and both sides are we.

This points to the hear fan in my mind so that will be the starting point.

Bad news only had time to wash it yesterday evening and not enough to tear parts off or enough light.

Upside I have an excuse to drive it everywhere I can with heated in your feet full blast to help keep it dry.  I will get there just not sure at what point.
