Registration of Classic Cars In Spain

Administration Process

I have a 1993 MK1 Cabriolet registered in Spain. I understand that cars over 25 years can be registered as classics in Spain but I cannot get any details - I am not Spanish speaking.
Is there a Spanish Section of the MK1 Owners Club ?
Does anybody have experience of the classic car registration process in Spain ?
your help would be appreciated.

Regards  Terry

Yes, you can, however….
This is Spain were talking about, there's always a however…

Now, I might not be right, but this is what I was told by a Spanish friend who is in the trade:

You can register it as a 'Coche Historico' best done through a local car club or a Gestor that specialises in this and you'll be given an 'H' plate.

And, once its on the register…….
It more or less becomes the property  or 'interest' of the state (registered as an historic asset) and you wont be able to export it, I.E. take it back to the UK.
So whilst you are the legal owner, and have to pay all the relevant taxes etc, you are putting it on an historical register.

That's a rough translation of the case.

You can just get a road tax allowance as its 25 years old. This depends very much on the town hall, and you need to apply for it at one of the town hall offices that deals with 'impuestos vehiculos traccion mecanica' or something similar.

You'll be sent a letter stating the amount of discount.
This should only be necessary once, although this isn't guaranteed.

If your not sure, and can't find someone Spanish speaking, then a Gestor is the best port of call.

The question to ask the town hall is:
Tienes algo discuentos para coches mas de 25 annos por los impuestos.(I havent got the NN symbol on this computer!so make sure you say annos correctly, n as in 'new', other wise its anus!)

I can't remember the exact wording, but that was the rough shakedown when I looked into it.

Whereabouts are you? I might be able to point you in the right direction for clarification.

The paper explaining the process in Spainish can be found here:
404 Not Found

and its € 96.80

Registration of Classic Cars In Spain

I was going to say do you know Denia on here?

Complex, Spain? Surely not…..

It's probably not that bad, but what's the advantage?

Reduced road tax you can get anyway and insurance companies should give you a good rate as well.

I couldn't find an insurer that would do agreed value though.

I do own an "historic car" registered in Spain -The MGB-  and I'm thinking about registering the Golf as historic as well, because it has some advantages.
The process is not difficult, but expensive: around 1.000 €.
The car must be at least 25 years old, and you have to make a dossier for the authorities through the local Mot (called here Itv) that certify the historic interest and originality of the vehicle. After a couple of inspections on the car on the Itv and payment of the taxes and costs of the dossier, you get your historic plate.

If you are interesed I can post the complete process, I just have to translate it.

I have to apologize.
The law have just changed in Spain and from this year a vehicle must be at least 30 years old to be registered as "Vehículo Histórico". It must be original, unmodified and has to be verified by a "laboratory" to check the vehicle is authentic and original. This is the most important expense of them all. The others are the taxes and the ITV costs. All toghether can reach up to 900 - 1000 euros.
You can keep and drive with either the original plate of the vehicle or the new "historic" one, at your choice.
The advantages: exemptions on the taxes, "light" MOTs and MOT very two, three or four years, depending on the age of the vehicle, instead of every year.
There are no actual advantages for the insurance as my Golf is insured as a classic car (97 eur. / year) without the historic registration, and for the MGB that is actually "historic", I pay the same in the same company
