Rear disc conversion

So I bagged some eBay swag today in the form of mk2 disks, stub axle, carrier and calliper set up.

They need a clean and refurb but good starting point for my next step on the project.

So basically at the wheel I have what I need but what else do I need to change from the Callipers back to the pedal if anything.

Need to know nice to have and must have. I assume

Flex hose
Compensator - nice to have ?
Servo - nice to have ?
Master cylinder ???

I don’t want to start the job and not have all the right bits.

Any descriptions on what you know would be great.

Mk2 Scirocco hand garage cables and you'll need to chop about 5mm of the handbrake tubes. You'll also not be able to use the wire hand brake cable guides that hang off the beam hangers where the beam bolts to the body.

New discs and pads obviously.

Did your swag come with the brake dust guard thingies that go behind the discs?

Have you done anything to the front brakes at all?

Are you doing it for looks or performance?

If you have a GTI you should have a brake compensator on the car anyway.

New flexes will be needed but you'll need 2 on each side and you'll have to make a little bracket too that mounts on the beam for the flexi from the Caliper to a hard line on the beam. You can use the original brackets for the flexi on the beam to the car bit.

Check out my build thread for
Mynx I think I detailed what I did in there

Have a look through the parts listed here

https://www.vwheritage.com/171698100-rear-disc-brake-conversion-kit-vw-spare

it's fairly comprehensive tbh.

I just checked and I didn't take any pis of the little brackets I made. Once you get the discs on and the flexis on you'll see where it's needed. I literally made an 'L' shaped bracket and drilled and tapped a hole into the beam and screwed it on to the top of the beam.

Seems to work ok.

That’s excellent thank you. I can crest a shopping list and collect the parts I need ready for a winter project.

Reason. Have you ever tried stopping a 1980 gti.

But also looks as the wheels I have a very see through.

The brake system is 100% original and not intentions of changing anything on the front set up just adding disks to ensure the boring point remains more consistent than what I get from drum.

Might put drilled disks on over time but for cosmetics not stopping need as running a standard 1.6 engine so not really needing it to stop a flying machine like some of the conversions out there.

So it sounds like I am going to have to drop the rear beam. Is so I shall polly bush it to death at the same time and maybe get it powder coated too.

Looks like it will be busy winter weekend at the end of the year.

To be hinest if you're thinking you need better brakes then upgrade the fronts too.

Keep a lookout for G60 or mk2 gti 16v brakes as they are the bigger type with larger calipers and pads.

If you want polybushes ~I have a set for sale https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=classifieds%2Fengine-and-running-gear_2%2Fpolybushes

I'll always do a great deal for a fellow music lover!

In the meantime try changing the brake fluid as if it's been in there more than 2 years it will be partly water!

I'm presuming you have VW11 calipers on the front of the golf at the moment? If so I've found them to be fine wit good quality discs and pads and fresh fluid. Takes a while to bleed them properly though. Use a bleeder kit to begin with then move on to using a spare leg!

I'm using M-tech brake discs front and rear with the black protective coating  https://www.mtecbrakes.com/brake-discs/volkswagen/golf-mk2-84-92/golf-1-8-gti-16v-11-88-04-92.html

With M-tech rear pads on the rear as well.

I went with brembo front pads on my mk2 gti 16v front brake set up just cos M-tech sent the wrong ones for the front and I could get brembo locally quickly.

The protective coating works well and stops the bits of disc that don't get used going rusty.

Buy on ebay though as weirdly enough the ebay price is cheaper than phoning them direct!

Thanks Ian

Now tot quite ready (allowed!!!!) to spend on the poly bush set yet. I will use the info to make a full shopping list and collect together  over the coming months (years I hope not ).

I want to do the job in one bit as will borrow my mates workshop on a single day to get it done and don’t want to extract the urine by blocking one of the ramps in the working week.
