Poor quality frame

Post

Hi guys bought a window frame for my cabby at the price of £256 and this arrived.

Is it just me or does this look poor workman ship or are they all like this.
I spoke to company that supplied it and they said all their stock are like it.
Not sure if I'm being fobbed off as will be fitting it over winter but not sure if it's strong enough for the stress placed on it

All the joins (8) are the same

Is that the Metal outer piece, as I have never seen a metal one that hasn't been welded properly as in no seam and ground flat and primered.

Chortle will be along and can tell your flat out.

If that was the inner plastic, I have never seen one of those that has gaps in it unless it was broken.

Looking at it poor quality alignment of the metal as it looks as if there is a difference in the parts… Welds will hold for a while, but the way the frame moves is wonky at best and I would think that the welds would give out from stress, as if you watch a frame fold, it folds a little uneven at first, and oiling and keeping the pivots oiled and clean is a necessary thing.

I have seen tops that won't fold right because of the pivots are rusty, and why I usually work heavy oil in them   after getting them to move with a penetrant first. Basically all the pivot points get worked over when I do a top, then every 6 months or so I spray them with wd-40….

Like in the oldie days, my daddy would take a coffee can filled with oil, and get it hot on a Grill.  Then he would drop Bike Chains, and stuff in it for 15 minutes or so, then allow the oil to cool, remove the things and hang them to drip dry over kitty-litter…. We never had to oil a bike chain ever,  even on Chain Saws, and motors driving saw blades….

Got any pictures of the inside of the frame on a joint or two because from these pictures it looks like the parts snap together at 3 points? 🤔

Hi,

This is a frame without the insert which the hood material staples into. You need to remove the old insert and re bond into the new frame.

However I would never fit that frame, on the face of it the welds are not good enough and the finish is poor as the parts are misaligned

I would return and ask for a full refund.

I think you will be wasting your time fitting that frame, if yours is shot find a good 2nd hand one or repair yours, from the looks of that frame you will be better keeping a genuine frame which is a solid bit of metal.
I would not even attempt to remove your old plastic insert as they are very well stuck on and they would of got brittle over time so may just break into small pieces?

Thank you for chiming in didn't look right to me either, but I have made do with worse ones that I have to rework.

I have a good refurbed frame here. Plus I can get NOS frames but they are expensive. But fit like a glove, some repo frames are a nightmare to use.
