Post

Hi All,

Is the value of a Cabriolet affected by if its a manual or automatic? Is one more valuable than the other in your experience?

Thanks

Autos do tend to sell for less.

I had an auto and it was great for me personally and I’d still have another of them.
If the gearbox fluids etc are changed inline with service schedule they are great.
Mine hadn’t been done I don’t think for years if ever.
It made a massive difference when it was was changed along with a few bits n bob’s.
Manual boxes tend to suffer with slop or loss of gear selector due to worn gear linkage set up or 2nd gear crunch due to a worn synchromesh which will require the box to be off to do the repairs.
Gear linkage fairly straightforward though.

Tend to agree. Manuals sell for more. People like to drive a classic rather than just pilot it.

Oddly though if you think ahead to electric conversion then an auto makes more sense. But if keeping with the petrol lump manual all the way.

The only reason why I sold mine was because I lost the use of one arm.
No power steering didn’t help.
It sat on the drive for about 6 months but it was sad to see it sitting there.
So o sold her on.
The guy who bought it did send me photos of the car at the various places he took her.
I put a lot of hours and money into that car and it was a pleasure to drive.
I believe he had an EPS kit fitted too.

Once the use of my arm returned a few years later I bought the Rivage LTH which was manual gearbox.
But yes, the auto was cruising machine..
No effort to drive at all.
I bought a late 1990 Clipper for my lass, manual gearbox, that’s had the lot done headliner, interliner and padding, rear window frame and mohair hood etc. serviced, tons of new bits, paint, new Weber carb.cam belt, Aug belt, etc
Since she’s had her knee done she hasn’t driven it and she’s not that keen because it’s old technology without power steering.
So that’s another I’ll have to part with.
I don’t need 2 cabbies lol.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

My 2p - not related to value but rather drivability of the car - I recently purchased a mk2 golf with automatic transmission and was convinced that I would convert it to manual. After a week or driving it though, I was a believer in the automatic lifestyle.

If you are after a cruiser and relaxed driving, automatic is great. I believe they return slightly lower mpg (on paper at least) but don't disregard it until you've tried it.

Also I like to think that older cars with an auto gearbox are less likely to have been ragged to death and probably have healthier engines / drivetrain as a result.

IMO manuals are more 'fun' to drive though - depends on what you want the car for and how you want to drive it / use it for :)

Agree most nice non-GTI MK2s that come are autos, one OAP owner kept indoors, low mileage and often with rare PAS. Same for old minis
