Well yesterday I set off on a 250 mile round trip to spread my mums ashes at her favourite place whitby.there was 12 of us in a few cars me being the only mk1 owner. my red beauty did 100 miles then decided to blow a 3 inch tear in the top radiator hose. Coolant everywhere managed to limp it a few hundred yards into a lay by where there was a few motor homes. I asked if anyone had any duct tape a couple from Hertfordshire said no but they had water.then I asked a guy from Holland. If he had any ? He said which colour lol that's what you call prepared. I managed to get it the last 15 miles or so and had a family meal and fulfilled my mums wishes .my family were shocked to see me there as I told them I'd broken down. I said never underestimate the ingenuity of a classic motorist .unfortunately we sprung a leak and had to come home me and my 4 kids on the back of a green flag truck .it was a long day .just thought I'd share this story of my Dutch friend made my day.and the lovely couple from Hertfordshire who refilled our water theres good in the world if you look hard enough ……pics attached

Sorry for your loss.

Great to hear about the fix though (goes off to find a spare roll of duct tape to stick in the car) and the helpful people too  :thumbs:

sorry to here of loss, but whitby is a nice spot.
Yes if duct tape cant fix it its definitely broken.  Just shared this on FB , cant go wrong for the price.

Thanks guys for the comments we lost her 8 weeks ago its been tough I cant pretend. Just do glad we got there .no my overflow pipe isent normally kinked but I've replaced it anyway today as it wasn't a very good fit .and the hose set you posted has a t junction  in it which mine doesn't have ? Any ways guys got a replacement this morning from gsf Ł6 plus vat so not bad at all and some Prestone coolant so my daily should be running asap thanks again guys much appreciated

Yes better with longer hose.  Now I did nosey and saw that yours is carb.. the t shape pipe I think goes to oil cooler on GTI version. Maybe that's the difference. Does look neat and tidy in your bay.

Sorry for your loss, but a great heart warming story of folks in need being helped by the few kind souls left in the world.

I had similar issues with the return where I was afraid of breaking the teat of the radiator, and or the hose leaking at the bend…. I came up with this as a fix a 90 degree barbed fitting… Those of us with power steering had to loop it around the power steering res and I hated that.

Gee I thought it was a in jest.

The Direction of the fan is that it sucks in air from the Grille of the car and Blows the heated air over the engine.

As the Fan runs you will notice that the flappers made of plastic foam will draw in closing off the Shroud, so that all air is directed out the back of the fan hole and that all air is sucking in from the outside and over the whole radiator.

If you have the upper radiator card and it is missing then the heated engine compartment air can recycle off the inside of the hood and back over the radiator, making what would be the warmest part of the radiator even hotter (similar to using the re-cycle cabin air on a/c equipped cars as the car uses the cool cabin air to blow over the evaporator.)

With the upper radiator card installed then the engine compartment air isn't allowed to re-cycle, and only outside air is allowed over the radiator.

While cleaning the garage I found my trusty indoor outdoor electronic thermometer so I figured what a good day for a test of my intake temperature.
I placed the probe up in the intake of the CIS airbox. No hose is attached to the inlet so it is currently sucking ONLY engine bay air just like those fancy "cone" filter setups everyone wants to buy.
So I get ready to drive to work. Outside air is 40*F . I start the engine and without warming it up drive thru the neighborhood to the interstate (about a mile away.)
By the time I get to interstate the intake temp is up to 50*F
5 miles of 70mph driving later temp is up to 70*F
5 more miles and we're up to 80*F
It levels out at 110*F for the rest of the trip.
Here's a shocker. After all that driving when I pull off the interstate onto city roads it goes down for a second and then soars upward over 120*F and my thermometer goes over range and starts flashing HHH
I repeated this test on the way home today and got identical readings.
So as you can see engine air is usually 80*F higher in temp than the outside air. Now let's pretend is a sunny summer day and it's 80*F outside. Wanna guess what your "cold" air intake is doing? Cooking your friggin engine that's what! You should have at least 160*F or worse due to the added rays of the sun baking the car itself.
Now let's add in that turbo you always wanted. Any idea what your intake temp might reach?
Now if I get time I'll hook the usual front bumper intake back up and see what's "normal" for a 1.8 CIS setup.

So if you install a Cold Air intake, and don't add a cover to force only cool air over it and shield it from the engine air you are hurting your performance.  ( the typical over hear Ricer Cone filters).

It's easy to get the wires the wrong way around.

Been there done that! It was found by the chaps doing the engine tuning, needless to say the urine was extracted!
