L31B Mars Red what the G6 ?

Hi I am starting to think about paint for my project and have searched out the Mars Red paint code I find L31B which is fine but then I also find the code with G6 after it as well, anyone know why ? Is it just a variant ? I just wanted to check as I want to make sure I get as close to the original mk1 shade as possible.

I'm assuming you are talking about your Cabby.

So as you well know paint codes are a minefield but VW took them to a whole new level boarding on insanity!
(can't take a joke, shouldn't have joined)

However again assuming yours is still original or you want to put it back to original you'll find all the correct codes in this link.

Paint Years

They are nicely listed by year of production, so if you know for sure when it was built you should be able to find the correct paint code.

If you are not sure what your build year was you can de-cypher the VIN code.

If you need help with that just ask!

Hi Mike, hope you’re well.
 Yep the cabby continues but was never Mars Red so have no code to reference.

Have had a look on the cabby chart ( many thanks for that ) and have found another code which is LA3A so still scratching my head a little which one to choose.

I really want the code for a tin top  but I’m pretty sure they’re the same just want to be sure.
So as always any help and advice greatly appreciated.

Early mars red was L31B, later mars red was LA3A that was worn by later mk1's 1981 on and early mk2's. 

I prefer LA3A myself, had a mk2 in LA3A.

No L31B is darker, later LA3A has an orangey tint to it.

Think it changed August 1980 when they went from Series 1 to Series 2.

I think it's the best shade of red they ever had personally. 

In fact I've had 2 mars red Mk2 golfs.

Still got a lot to do but I thought buying the paint would keep the momentum going as after many wheel related trials and tribulations I have found my second wind ( and a bit more money ) so intend to keep pushing forward. Thanks for the info chaps and Roach I am inclined to agree, I think the colour will be the icing on the Mars Red cake

I ran a LA3A MK1 Driver as my daily driver back in the day and the lads in the pub were always taking the pee asking about my "orange" Golf.

I've had the GTI for 19 years and think Mars red is the archetypical Golf colour.

Early-1800

Have a bit of sympathy for us car salesman for a change back in the day.

When we had Inari Silver.
No its green, no its silver, no its green no its silver….




Many of us were years later diagnosis with 'PTCD'.

My Derby is in Inari Silver!

Once again there's two shades. One more silver and one more green.

Can't find the exact colour anywhere

I can remember when I tried to match a 69 super beetle that was Mars red…. totally more orangeie than red.

I was lucky enough to have the rear license plate cover to match…..  It was close but still needed a little tweeling to get it exact….

 Still had to do a spray out to check the colour of what’s in the tin, had to make sure they got the right formula.

  Is that your sweet ride ? Jealous!! Mine doesn’t have the pedigree that yours does but I’ve had it for about 7yrs now and not really used it or done much apart from general maintenance to keep it Mot’d so now seems like the time to play and as it’s a late 1992 car not worth a lot of money so thought what the hell… a homage to the car I can’t afford lol
