Mk1 Golf 81 - GLS aka - Lemony...the dreaded MOT
I've had my Lemon for 3 years, but been galavanting around Australia for half of it so he hasn't got the care and attention he deserves.
I put Lemony through a preliminary MOT before the due date, just to get an idea of where I stood.
(I've added the results for your viewing pleasure) MOT plan
001 - Putting the original (barely sat in) seats = RESOLVED
002-003 - New wipers = RESOLVED
004-009 - a friend is rewiring the EXTREMELY bodged electrics (bunny hopped relays and rusty earths all over the shop) = RESOLVED
010-012 & 015-017 - easy / cheap fixes = RESOLVED
Coolant leaks x2 - bit out my remit - will be getting this done professionally
013-014 - It's about time Lemony had a new exhaust as it's 30 years of bodge jobs and jubilee clips - this is where I'm stumped. I'm really not sure what route to take.
VW heritage? eBay? on here? I'm just not sure what I'm looking for to be honest…
My OVERALL Lemony plan
Restore Lemony to as close to 'original' as possible. (Using replica parts where necessary)
As much as I love the euro look I'm gona try for a proper 80's cruiser …just a little low so I'm not driving a monster truck ___________________________________________________________________________________________
EXHAUST - what I'm looking for/what I need help with
- close to original, maybe a little less rusty
- is there such thing as an 'original' looking stainless steel one, or is that silly?
- what are the names of the parts I actually need? (looking for everything other than manifold)
- where is best to buy from?
- how really hard are they to fit?
CARB - what I'm looking for/what I need help with
- Also, the carburetor is on it's last legs, I'm often thrown around like I'm on a bucking bronco
- Would I be again best to go VW heritage and get a Weber? What other options do I have? I've already had a carb CLEAN but it's on it's way out

Firstly hope you had fun down under, I've been a couple of times and absolutely loved it !!
I bought one of these the other day and I was pleasantly surprised for what I paid.
eBay item number: 322034902015
I gave £160 as an offer and it was accepted and that included free delivery which I thought was pretty good.
Now! I haven't fitted it yet but it looks well made comes with gaskets and everything you need.
Hope this helps
Good luck

From a test fit I did find that you may have to grind it a wee bit to clear the intake on my Digi-fant, and that you need a flex pipe attached to it to allow for movement of the pipe to engine vibration…
You do need to shield it, or wrap it, and the wrapping it costs more than the purchase price, I think I paid 99 bucks for mine years ago. The reason for hte heat shield is that on Automatics it can cause excessive heat soak on the starter and excessive heat transfer to the intake air. It can also distort and weaken CV Boots as well as bake power steering rack seals.
But I will tell you that the "pacesetter" header I put on my 90 Cabby was challenging as I did have to grind it a bit, and heat the tubes up to bend them to clear a wee bit, but I think the Seat of the Pants Dyno test was at least a 50hp feel. The best part was silent exhaust, as the previous 4-1 manifold had more cracks in it than an insane asylum.

The g-60 was better designed and made…. if you compare the thickness of the castings….

Briano1234 thanks for the detailed info you know your stuff! I had to read it twice as I'm a novice more cracks than an insane asylum hahaha!
I've come to sort out the exhaust - got a full new system (not for much performance) from eBay!
That does looks heaps better designed!
