Ideas please

I'm in the process of buying a house that currently has a 2.7mx5.5m rear access concrete sectional single garage, once I'm in the plan is to remove this and replace it with a 4.7mx6.3m concrete block pitched roof job that will ultimately house my mk1.

Looking for ideas for the build/layout, what you've done, what you wish you would have done etc

Photos are good but don't advertise your valuables by my account.

Cheers,
Alex

I built a flat roofed 7x4m shed that houses my project car of choice.

I purely did it to avoid planning and building control etc……. it didn't stop the neighbours complaining tho.

Old picture, excuse the mk2.

My advice is go big. My garage is approx 4m x 15m and it soon gets filled!
As this isn't attached to the house I would also ensure you have good quality garage doors, scum will always be tempted by a garage not attached to the house. Consider an alarm or potentially some cctv. Sounds overkill but we live in a great area and still see/hear about people being found looking in neighbourhood garages etc

Oh yes and consider height if you would like to get under the car or perhaps putting in a pit if you can't go high.

I second what the others have said! My MK1 lives in the double garage of my fairly modern house with 5.1m internal dimensions. It is brick built with a concrete block inner skin that is half height (why I don't know!) and the 100mm each side that I've lost feels like a lot more than 100mm!
If I were to built a garage/workshop here are a few things I would consider based on things that annoy me about mine!

Build as big as possible, space fills up very quickly especially if you start stripping stuff down!
If possible and if your budget permits, build it with an insulated cavity wall to help prevent damp and help to control the temperature.
Consider your gable walls if you have them, my garage has the gables to each side so the roof trusses sit front to back and my lintels for the garage doors sit on a brick pier between the two doors. I fear one day I'll nudge it and the roof will be on top of my golf!:oA decent electrical supply, at least 32 amp if not more.

@Raul , that looks like a fairly substantial stereo you have in your garage, is it the noise from that that your neighbours complained about?;)

Another key ingredient is a beer fridge and a couple of fold up chairs

Lol, I was also thinking that. You also need to consider the range of your wifi router  ;) !

On a more serious note, also insulating the roof!
As Wes said, a pit is also good if the water table isn't too high in your area, my dad had a pit in his garage and it was great once you'd bailed out the 300 gallons of water!

If you have the room a two post ramp is cheap enough second hand on eBay so build it high enough to slot one in then we can all be jealous. My garage is to small so work on the drive or roadside :(

Same reason I have this:

Spitting image of my brother, I found a "T-shirt" with that on the back and Sent ot to my Brother.   When he opened it his kids said, "Dad, how did UncleB put your picture on it?"

He wore it to work and told everyone that in his youth he was a male model… lolol

I have a single car garage, with a bench at the back.  It will fit most of my cars, and with a 8 foot ceiling it is tall enough to do most any serious car work….  I also have a attached car port where I usually do trans swaps, clutches and other things.

The But, I have is that when my wife cleans things she sticks it in the Garage… Then I have to "Clean it out".

Before I made the bench….

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Yup big as possible, then double it and add a couple of sheds. at least.

but make it big.

A bit more advice, as big as possible.

You'll fill it up, so make it big.

I have a car and a half garage and 2 sheds, one built specifically for housing car parts so I could knock down the garage to build a new one. Filled it and there's still stuff in the garage!

I've got an odd shaped area to the side of the house, so I'm having to build a wedge shaped garage. it's going to be about 80sqm when it's done. But I also have an area to the end that will be another shed or workshop.

Just remember that if you do fabrication, welding, grinding etc then a separate area  for these things is helpful so your garage doesn't fill up with dust, sparks and more dust.

I'm going with a pit and hopefully a bit of a ramp too (budget and space will decide what type).

Lots of storage with doors on it and lots of benches. Use the higher areas of the walls for thin shelves too, above head height is just wasted space otherwise.

Weird thing is we've just about done all the current projects, so I'll probably have to buy something else to do in the new massive garage and then it won't be big enough……………………  :lol:Oh by the way, go big!
