Just a quick one is the TT mk1 a future classic? There only about £ 1500 at the moment.

Yep, I think some people are already buying them as such.

Thinking of getting in early?

I must admit the thought of one does appeal instead of the tin top……….  :o

If history teaches us anything about German cars then it'll be another 40 years before there aren't enough of them left for these to become valuable classics.

Give yourself a head start and try a citroen saxo vts, can't be many of them left or just buy a ford, any Ford will do it seems

I'm still looking for a Y-reg BMW mini, they are on the cusp of old banger to expensive classic, esp as next yr marks th 20th anniversary.

Agree any Ford esp fast fords just go up and up even the not so good Fester mk3/4 x10 face lifts Si/Zetec S

My friend has an early one - stock, mint, and never leaves the garage. I don't get it myself. A classic that is a remake, and is still being made in pretty much the same form?

No of mk1 Golfs I've seen in the last 6 months = 0
No of BMW Minis = 1-3 per day.
I guess that makes them popular, though.

I have to say, I am really tempted by these TTs. A lot of car for the money. Is it the R32 or the 20VT which will hold value better?

Apprently they are quite good to drive, even the low powered 'one' is 90bhp. Compared to MK1s (even when MK1 were 20 yrs old), they don't seem to rust or rot so you can buy them without having a weldathon and repaint on the horizon. The have PAS and decent brakes as standard, most have AC.

When I've been looking there are known issues and fixes for the elecy PAS and gearbox woes, otherwise get in and go like a modern car.. Parts are still a few quid on ebay and not £95+ for a small peice of plastic trim like a MK1. Think a lot is down to people thinking that they'll be like an early 1959 £30,000 mini. I don't think so, as too many like the one you quote being saved whereas the original minis were used and then scrapped. However for nice hatch to run as a daily with miniimal costs or even appreiating value, hard to beat?

I know very little about the mini, it's a swear word in this house as Mrs MB has this, loves it like a child, and won't part with it.  14 years old, 59k on with a fVWsh but wouldn't get £2k for it if she wanted to sell it so might as well hang on to it, drive it a little in the summer, and see if this golf in drag ever goes up in value!!

The beetle was a bit of a rival to the mini but no where near as popular, I rarely see one on the road these days and VW don't make the beetle anymore.

Although sadly the folk who service it at VW know less and less about these cars these days!! Last service said boot wouldn't open from indoor control panel…that's because it was locked mate…the big key slot should have given you a clue!!

One car I think is a modern classic in the making is the Audi S1

Ah, I'm with you now. I saw one next to mine a few months back and thought it might be a more sensible daily.

Speaking of dailies…

You think? I was planning on an A1 as a sensible car.

But isn't an A1 just an expensive Polo and a S1 a fast expensive Polo?

What's wrong with a Polo, apart from being called a Polo?

Whenever these debates come up, nobody suggests that perhaps the Mk1 Golf ought to be removed from being considered a classic. Except the GTI of course.

Or are we saying all cars, once they get old, are classics?

For me a classic car needs to be iconic and the mk1 golf is iconic.   It starts to become subjective, the RGT5 is iconic but the non turbo R5? Probably not.   Same with the 205.  But the golf started a revolution in modern motoring.

I get what you're saying about it's a classic just because it's old and I've seen some cars being marked at crazy prices just because they're old when they weren't much good when they were new - let's face it who amongst us craved after a Leyland Princess yet someone would want silly money today

With AWD and manual box.   It's the lupo GTI on steroids.  This is making me miss my G40, now that was a fast polo.

I don't follow.
Why would the mk1 be removed from being called a classic?
And if it was, why would the GTI not be removed??? Seems a little unfair on the 3 or so people that own a non-GTI mk1.

Why is the Mk1 Golf a classic?
Why would it be unfair?
Who keeps a list of what's officially a classic or not, anyway?

But but but our manufacturing industry was ace back then!!

I was thinking about this a bit more and Paul_c's question is really a challenging one.    What makes a car a classic? I mentioned iconic but it's more, for me a classic car is a car that still looks great today - I look at my Mk1 and it brings a smile to my face, it's a thing of beauty and similar I look at Mrs MBs beetle and think that's a thing of beauty too.  But then it comes down to personal taste, I've never got the whole e-type hype; it's not a bad looking car but it isn't my cup of tea.

Will I look back in 20 years and still appreciate the lines of a TT?  Yes probably.    The mini?  again probably.

Its quite a personal thing. Sure, insurance companies "define" who they give classic car insurance to (or rather which cars, but its based purely on age). By that logic, every car is a future classic.

Personally for me it needs to be either historically significant, and/or special or great in some way. So Allegros, Marinas etc don't cut it - but I respect that they have their loyal following and we ought to preserve the remaining ones too. More so we can compare them to the better cars!

The GTI was definitely a great car, interesting if you look back historically it wasn't the first of anything - the R5 was earlier for hot hatch, the A40 farina earlier for hatchback, Fiat 127 defined the "modern" transverse engine layout with end-on gearbox, etc etc But it pulled together a lot of the elements of what went on to create a new genre. Similarly, the Golf convertible was a very well executed conversion, at a time when others were a bit of a bodge.

You could also define it with their depreciation curve on value - they'll have gone through the trough and be on the way up. I don't think we're there with TTs etc yet.
