Falling in and out of love with my mk1.. am I the only one?

Post

Who else shares this strange love hate relationship

Hi, I haven't posted or been on here for ages and am not a paid up member of the club anymore, the reason for this is that I'm constantly falling in and out of love with my mk1 Golf.
It gets worse when I put it into storage for the winter, I start forgetting about it and find myself looking at new Fiesta ST's, new Ford Focus ST's, Mk2 Focus RS's and E92 M3's and stuff, I start craving something modern, something comfortable, bigger and something fast, I find myself wanting something that stops when I put my foot on the brake and that I don't get back ache after going for a long drive. I say to myself right that's it I'm selling it, it's gone!
Then spring comes and it comes back out and then I think "yeah it is cool, the kids love it and it's only going to appreciate in value etc".
Last week I was 100% going to sell, this week I'm 100% going to keep, it's tiring.
Does anybody else suffer from this first world problem or is it just me? IMG_0856.PNG

😂 they are actually great fun to drive, much better on the road than the mk1. That's the point!

I just don't think I could ever bring myself to part with the golf though, I've put a lot of work into the car and I know I would regret it.
Let's not forget that my golf is 34 years old, and its little 1.5 chucks out 70hp!
That's the problem I have every winter when it goes away I start comparing a 34 year old 1.5 golf  to  quick modern stuff. Leading to falling in and out of love with it all the time!

Hi Yellowcabb,
You have really answered you question yourself…it isnt modern-and therein lies the dislikes and the passion of ownership.
Financially they are like an expensive lover, and yet we/you go back for more:wub:! And we all know why:thumbs:I presume you do drive a modern car (as yours is in storage in the winter I guess) and it could just be that you need to try the ST etc just to get THAT urge out of your system before you make a final decision to sell-but what then if that does not satisfy- and you loose a packet on selling?
I do sypathise and understand where your coming from, and suspect that most of us go through this exact dilema, especially when the thing kicks us in the :o(deleted)
At the end its your choice, choose wisely my friend .

Oh, if and only if! you ever decide to sell that beautiful looking cabriolet, then please give me the heads up as it looks fabulous!!
Regards.
Marcus.

Thanks for the compliments on the car Marcus.

I am lucky enough to not need a car, I get a work van supplied to travel to and from work, meanwhile we have a ford kuga for the family that the Mrs ferries the kids about in. This leaves me to have a "toy" of my choice.. the mk1
I think I just need to spend some more money on it in the summer to reignite the passion!! Might have to get some recaro experts seats I've been drooling over, should make it more comfortable too.
You are right about the expensive lover analogy!
I know deep down I would get bored of something modern quite quickly and then cry about selling the golf for the rest of my life

Modernise the running gear, best of both worlds then.

Stick a bigger engine in the Golf or sell it and get a Mk1 Gti cabriolet.

You will notice the difference in the GTi, I can tell the difference in driving my 1.6 Scirocco (90bhp) and my Mk1 Gti cabriolet (112bhp) I also find I use less petrol in the Golf.

Even keeping it simple and fit a 2.0l from a mk3 Golf and still run carbs or go mad and a 20v turbo…

I guess you have the basic seats in your car as I find I can seat in my seats for some time no problem and the seat base actually goes all the away to the back of my knees, a lot of modern cars fit smaller shorter seat bases to make the car look bigger.

Just food for thought..

Fast fords now a days just blend into the background like most modern tin boxes on the roads, give it a few more years and you will be able to pick up Festa ST not next to nothing while the Golf will only increase in valve….

1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Look my friend my best advice is to you and I've no idea how old you are but…

Stop comparing!
Different worlds, different times and technology.

There's nothing wrong with the new, I have one myself but when I look at and drive my mk1 Golf I have a different mindset.

I don't look at it as a failure, some kind of freak, no.
It was at the time the most high tech (stop laughing you lot at the back) and most sold car on earth but don't compare it with today's cars please.

Looks like you've got a really good looking Cabby there and should be proud to talk about it and more importantly drive it.

But if you walk up to the car and you feel nothing, well you need to sell it and let someone else how appreciates more than you do.

Lastly.
Mine has little or no faults apart from it's an old car but the moment I lose the love for it' I will sell it.

Friends think I'm mad but I'm not, well maybe not! 😉

I know what you mean yellow buddy. I'm driving my golf cab automatic andd it is slow off the blocks and I think of buying a sleek newer cab . Then the sun comes out and I'm happy to pointlessly along. Last week a complete stranger loved my car and took pictures.
So I have the same ups and downs as you . And I ain't selling golfus,

Falling in and out of love with my mk1.. am I the only one?

Ok here is why I love mine. It is a drivers car. No power anything (could argue that about the engine sometimes also). If you like to drive and enjoy throwing it in a bend then it is your control vs the bend etc. I just love that element of being in control of a machine and not a computer. A bit like a motorbike vs a car.  If you don’t love the experience of driving it then sell it. If you just want speed buy a motorbike you can’t beat them £ per HP.

I think the main problem is I put it away for the winter in storage and I don't see the car for 5 months… I then start forgetting about it, forgetting how much I like it and how much potential it has to be incredible if I keep on improving it bit by bit like I've been doing over the years.
I know deep down I could never bring myself to sell it, I couldn't bare the thought of anyone else owning it and driving around in it.
I just wondered if I was alone in this way of thinking.
It didn't help with the fact I kerbed one of my alloy wheels a couple of weeks before it went away into storage.. I won best wheels at the club AGM in 2016 with these bad boys. So I had the hump with it when it went away this time 😂

I have a love/hate affair with mine similar to my Mrs. after 40 years.

I don't put mine away, one is a daily driver that as of last week got a new power Steering Pump, Radiator Jug and Cap along with a new Dizzy Cap.

The other is my "Baby' that I drive like I stole it sometimes. and I need to respray it or at least the drivers door as the paint doesn't match…Maybe this year.

I really have an affinity for the AH sprites, and  MG's so it is a constant yen to get one of those and rebuild my youth and sell my dubs…. But then again, I can get in my VW's and drive it and don't have to tinker or tune engine bi-weekly… :)Yes all cars have a love/hate thing……but these newer ones is more of a love to drive, hate to work on ie: 2003 Oldsmobile.
The prices for parts on the newer ones can be expensive…….more so than the older ones…ie: Jeep Cherokee Headlamps on a 2015.

It is always a love/hate/love thing with most cars…. for me it is….
at least with my old dub, I don't have to worry about a monthly payment until I get to the PUMP and see the price of gas :)

When oil was 50 bucks a barrel, and they were still charging 4.00/gallon……

But then again I can remember when 2.00 would fill my MG 7.2 gallons and 130 avgas for my rover was about 60 cents/gallon at this moment gas is 2.39/gal.

But I can still remember the first day of ownership my Diesel beat the MPG  of my Midget which was getting 55mpg on the highway.

Cars is always a love/hate thing.  Just when you decide to trade it in or sell it, it starts running great it Knows…. It knows.

Haha.. When I got my first car in1973 petrol here was about 40 pence a gallon (about 55 cents US ). Now it's about £1.20 a Litre ($1.67 US ). I'm running a diesel as well as my Golf. Simply because of the Diesel economy.  My Son emigrated to the States last year and he tells me Diesel powered cars are pretty rare over there ?

Yes since VW's Diesel Gate…. when I bought my Diesel VW, I could only find it at 1 gas station in town, and truck stops….

Lots of Mercedes and TDI's here in Atlanta….

Stu,

I think we all get it a bit, especially those cabby owners that don't daily them and they go away for winter.

Your car is uber cool, you know how much I love it. There is only a few Lagos Yellow cars about.

I did the maths when I built my small bumper cabby (link below) and couldn't afford to do a car from the ground up or would have done Lagos yellow 100%

Why don't you try popping some money away then put it on some decent coilovers, get some nice brakes and do and engine conversion.

I absolutely love my 1.8T. There are newer engine conversions out there now, but for not crazy money you could make your car feel like new and drive like new but with that cool retro vibe

or come take a look at mine and I might be tempted on yours with some money my way if you want one already done
