Post

Hi

Looking to buy a  1992 clipper Cabrio but it's a three speed automatic, are they reliable and any good?, what's performance like compared with the manual?

Just need some advice before I make the purchase!
Thanks

it is an automatic, on a good day you will get 23-25mpg, bot the 35-45 I got on my 90 5 spd.

Dependable?  They have gone over 400K with no maintenance… I have about 225K on one and 185 on the other.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Clipper Cabrio automatic gearbox-performance?

Hi mate I currently own a 1990 1.8 clipper cabriolet automatic I personally love it I'm getting past changing up and down all the time .and I find it relaxing to drive .foot down and go .as they say .I swapped my pierburg for a Weber  32/34 dtml which I love it's my daily so I rack up a few miles 10k last year and I think the power is great. The kick down is really good .and as I put on a previous thread I had it dynod and it ran 106.9 bhp .seeing how it only had 88 bhp from the factory and its 29 years old on the original engine 133k on the clock .I think that's awesome. I've done a few mods to get to that but still good all the same

I also have a Weber conversion and get mid 30's MPG (imperial) just using the car sensibly, it can pick it's skirts up on kick down and happily sit on the tail of a friends tuned MGB all day long.
It is no tarmac burner but is still able to keep up with, and exceed when required, modern traffic.
I can still comfortably hear my sound system with the roof down and the windows up cruising at 80mph. (On a private road, obviously!)  But I do have a wind blocker and use JBL and Rockford Fosgate speakers.

The best part of an automatic where I live, Hilly Atlanta GA.  No shifting at all….. I have had fun over the years, it isn't a rocket off the Start, but for long term driving at 85-90 mph it isn't that bad…. I usually get 19 to 22mpg in town in the summer as I may or may not have the top down but the A/C is run…

On the interstate over hear I have no issues with matching traffic.  The biggest draw back I found is when I first had the car on a long drive with the a/c on was that the Engine Oil temp would rocket to the near red….

I fixed it by throttling back (75-85 mph) to 65, and the a/c  finally fixed it with the addition of a external oil cooler on it, as the 90's Digifants didn't have the oil stabilizer attached to the (oil cooler) in the water system/oil filter as the 89''s and earlier ones did.

I used the sandwich plate from a Volvo (Whaler), and ran new hoses to a low profile exchanger that I placed in front of the condenser for the a/c as it was thermo controlled it opened up at 95dc, and kept the engine cool on long drives….I never had a temp spike issue after installing running down the road…..
