Campaign -no stripes or arch trims fitted?? could this be factory?

Hi, there is a low mileage A reg campaign being sold near me  and from all the pics and info it appears genuine. BUT it has not got any stripes on the sides or rear hatch AND has not any plastic wheel arch covers . None look like they were removed at least in the photos.
Before I go and look, Question! Were any campaignes supplied (from VW) without these?? Or has this been butchered?

Just managed to see chassis numbers- and it does not have an E after 17! -It is ZZZ17ZDW650737

What does that make it??

Slight correction, I now think it has plastic arches but they appear to be lhasa green coloured like the body?
I think its a fake…

Could be a campaign but not original condition. Probably painted at some point and not put back together correctly.

In Europe their runout Campaigns were called Pirelli Edition with Pirelli wheels and colour coded trim. Could have been a personal import

A while back someone else had one on here and was converting to UK spec by adding black trim etc

The chassis number has ….DW650737 which is late

It does have these wheels and I think your right the bumpers and arches are same as the  body colour.
It was imported by the first owner so it all begins to add up.  

Are these more desirable?

Desirability is subjective…… I think they look a bit shi..naff, well the white one above does

However, it is rare over here and I like originality so I'd leave as is.

I'd quite like to see a full coded one in lhasa green, the white one looks a bit cheap to me (I imagine red would too) but green sounds quite nice

Jeez H Christ, Think that's just a old car robbed of parts, the arches are body coloured because the black trims are missing. Good luck to the seller but remember kids, caveat emptor.  

With these cars, and the mix/match availability of yard swapping car parts, it isn't inconceivable that some one takes a "L" and makes it a GTI/LS/Campaign.

The Vin on the door jam or the build sheet is the answer to what it was OEM to what it is now.  Surprised they didn't use the Cabriolet Karmann Plaques to make it a truly special Karmann Edition.

Even Dashes can be swapped with donor cars vin.

Hi all , no its not the one on Ebay! Its a damned sight better- in the pics- (I am going to see it on Friday) and looks original.
Was traded into (robbed?) by a local VW dealerhasn't been started in 19years…
I will let you know what I find.

Will need a complete recommissioning but compared to a full blown restoration sourcing loads of missing or broken part is relatively cheap and quick.

If you are really unlucky every fluid; petrol, coolant, brake fluid etc will have turned to sludge or jelly but just mainly time to put right. New belts and tyres and off you go.

The estimate looks low compared to the £12,000 Buxton GLS earlier this week. We will find out tomorrow.

It is NOT (in my opinion) a Campaign and it actually appears to be a Pirelli Edition as the plastics and mirrors are body colour painted and theres no stick-on stripes.

However the car with its DW650737 chassis number appears to be odd.It appears to be a genuine low mileage Gti, has a gopod interior, It has the original Lhasa Green paint on the tinwork (complete with quite a bit of rust coming through on bonnet,sills,doors and back lower panels) and is supposedl;y untouched for 19years.
YET THE PLASTICS ALL LOOK LIKE THEY were QUITE RECENTLY PAINTED-AND THE COLOUR DOES NOT MATCH!
I am not convincved that this isnt a std Gti dressed up to look like a Pirelli by painting the plastics and fitting the Pirelli wheels and trims.

It is only my opinion! I might be wrong…but before anyone rushes out and bids on the pics I would reccomend you look for yourself.
Under the bonnet there's lots of aging and it would have to be stripped before starting or using.

Personally I am not interested, but I am sure someone will bid good money for it especially given the 62k Miles.
 

I recall reading something about the Pirelli editions quite a while ago, but if I'm honest I can't be ar*sed trying to find it again to confirm any of the below, sorry!

However this might give you a starting point to do some research of your own.

Anyhow, if I am remembering correctly a 'Pirelli' can only have a W65 onward chassis number, as is the case with the auction car. The 'D' or 'E' has no significance on it being one or not  (unlike with UK 'Campaigns', which some say is an indicator of it being one or not)

A standard GTi will have a W64 number.

I think the principle differences in the two is limited to the body coloured bumpers, mirrors and spats, the lack of stripes plus 'Pirellis' were only available in a reduced number of colours, (of which Lhasa green was one).

Someone on here pointed out a while ago that European destined MK1's (and unofficially imported cars to the UK) have clips screwed to the bottom of the 'C' pillar, near the top of the rear seat back, at the glass line for tidying away the rear seat belts… Did the auction car have them?

Certainly has all the other traits of being a 'Pirelli'.

Some interesting results.

The Ford Puma with warranted 53k miles looks a steal at £1,100, makes the '84 Fester Ghia 1.1 look expensive at £2,900.

A gaggle of MB 200/230SLKs for £1,700 to £2,500 look fun if you can cope with the potential expensive repairs.

The BRG Classic mini for £3,000 appears cheap because like MK1s, rough ones seem to make more than that these days

Not all 80s hot hatches are going mental, the 205 1.9 GTI with less than 100k miles only made £3,800 but was listed as a non runner and all the plastic trim was different colours? p155 poor cars are still only worth p1ss poor money. The bright red 306 saloon with 32k miles looked like it has a good 10+ years cheap retro motoring for just £750

At the other end of the scale the 4x4 Panda made £7,500……

I hope they don't regret buying iot for that much. Especially as it was not a campaign but possibly a Pirrelli.
It pays to look at the car, though I guess its the old draw of 'low mileage' that did for it. It had potential but would cost loads to get it right.
Perhaps it will pop up on here?
