Breakdown cover for older cars

Post

I’m currently with the AA as they will cover me so if I’m driving my 1988 Mk1 Golf or my 1978 Scirocco I’m covered and if I do breakdown I can ask them to take the car to my home as that’s what I would prefer to do as I don’t really trust garages and I could properly fix the car myself.

Every year the AA increase the price and I have to haggle to get the price down but it’s always going up a little. I’m currently paying approximately £14 a month and I’ve not needed the AA for my cars in the last 11 years I’ve been with them.

Looking online a lot of places don’t cover older cars, and my cars being 30 and 40 years if difficult to find cover at a good price.

So who are you covered with and how much are you paying?

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

I have been withthe RAC since I started driveing (seems almost a centuary ago:'() and have used them to bring two blown motorbikes back from Southern Europe and fix my Mk1 and recover/fix other cars and bikes in all that time.Perhaps a dozen call outs.

The relevant thing about their policy is that they cover YOU and it does not matter what vehicle you are driving when you call the as they will do their stuff. Not the cheapest at  a cost of £193 (with my loyalty discount of £19.00 aplied) for 'Premier Cover' which includes just about the lot!!Look them up, especially as I think the club obtained a discount?
So, as far as I know (the disclaimer:lol:) they cover YOU- in any vehicle-, that is the important bit.
Hope this helps.
Marcus.

Sods law says that if you drop the cover-you will break down…

I know this is no help for Mark but as a comparison with EU prices.
I'm with Austria's version of the AA called the ÖAMTC.

I pay €120 per year so £100.
It covers me, everything I drive and upto 2 cars registered in my name.

This is premium coverage.
If I brake down anywhere in Europe they will take my car to where ever I want. Back home from England or Norway or just my local workshop.

From the moment I request it I get 5 days car hire for free.
There after at half price.

But the medical coverage is unbelievable.
As a member if I'm taken ill on holiday for example and I have a car with me they provide all of the above for the car and Medivac support for me in other words a Medical Helicopter etc..

Plus transportation to and from the hospital for my wife and son or will cover the costs of a train or plane.

Full private medical insurance etc.. all for a hundred quid per year.
Now that's about the first time I can honestly say Austria got something seriously right.

I used the service once this year shortly after I came out of Hospital because I had a tire let go and just didn't have the power to undo the wheel nuts.

Lucky I'd pulled the Mk6 into a petrol station.
So from calling the on a hot sunny morning the job was done in 30 minutes while I sat in the shade having an ice cold bottle of water.

Best thing is the make a profit, go figure! 😉 👍🏼
