Best exhaust? And garage to fit carbs

Post

Hi all

Just recently acquired a Mk1 90' cab. Quite a bit been done already so just a few snags for me to do but also want to change the standard exhaust.

What aftermarket exhausts do people have, any recommendations? I'm 37 not 21 so need that to reflect in the noise.

Also thinking about twin carbs. Whilst I may be able to fit them I don't think I could set them up. Always like going to garages under recommendation. Any suggestions in the north london area?

Thanks!

I would not bother going down the twin carb route as you are asking for trouble, do you know what carb is fitted, Original Pierburg or Webber? Get the carb which is fitted properly tuned.

Exhaust, I fitted a stainless steel 4,2,1 manifold which freed up the top end revs and made my standard exhaust sound a little more fruity, being in my 40 I did not want a loud exhaust. When the rest of the standard exhaust system finally gives up I'm going to get a custom made long life stainless system as you can get a lifetime warranty and get it made to your requirements.

The original down pipe, towel bowl type with the C clips is not a good design.

Are you after more power from the engine?

Thanks for the heads up on the carb, maybe I'll park that idea in that case. The thinking was to let it rev a little more freely and to get the best out the engine (and a little more power of course)

Def going to put an exhaust on at some point. Was thinking this http://www.classic-vw.co.uk/mk1-golf-cabriolet--scirocco-stainless-steel-exhaust-system-slash-cut-tip-15237-p.asp ?

Any other tips and tricks? The guy before has done quite a lot and all the things I'd probably do so just some snagging points  IMG_1280.PNG

If it's still the standard engine a GTI cam will help free up some more horses, you can get a hotter cam but you can have problems with losing low down torque and lumpy tick over.
If you do go for a Gti cam shaft (DX engine) make sure it's one for hydraulic tappets as early cars (pre 84 ish) had shims and it won't work with your engine.
