Rolled my Golf today..........Way Cool!!!!

Finally rolled the mk1 today. I had been working up to this for weeks and today finished pulling the running gear off, tank out (avoiding poisonous spider ? see below) and carefully pulled the lock pins out off the spindles. With a bit of muscle she spun gently over exposing the underside for all sorts of cleaning and welding purposes.

This is the final rotisserie I ended up making. It is based on a SuperCheap engine  stand with additional outriggers and braces.

The Cross bar picks up the bumper bar mounts, and bolts to the engine stand on the two uprights (to allow for future height adjustment)

And just when I thought removing the fuel tank was going well, I came face to face with an Ausie icon - the RedBack Spider. Overseas visitors may care to research this little charmer… after all not many venomous spiders have their own song  :)

More to come…..

I also like the engine stand approach - far cheaper than one of the pre built rollers and looks to do the job just as well.

Got any specs on the metal tubing used or dimensions? I guess getting the centre of rotation right is pretty key to avoid the car flipping round quickly and getting stuck the wrong way up on the "spit" so to speak

Cheers,

The engine stand approach was inspired by a fellow rally adict, I was lucky to find nice solid ones at a good price (AU$160.00) the cross bars are 50x50x4.5 mm mild steel, the outriggers 25x50x4 (or whatever the standard measurements are locally) The bumperbar pickups are 50x50x6mm angle.

The use of the two uprights to mount the cross bar came after I tried to get  the cross bar up to the full height of the spindle and had a "Darwin" moment, it really was too unstable!! Dropping it down a couple of hundred made life much easier.

The car in that other thread is immense… Not really a standard restoration, but it will look very cool when it's all done…

Another 1/2 hour at work was well spent
