Leaky roof even though its new

Hi i have recently bought a 1990 mk1 golf cabriolet and i have been driving it all summer without any problems even with the occasional bout of rain, but now its starting to rain a bit heavier my roof has started to leak it soaked my driver and passenger side seat it is an all white model and so has made a bit of a mess i have re proofed it but not sure whether i did it properly used the autoglym kit, but it appears to ba coming through the gasket in between the seal and frame at front of the car near the hood handles, does anyone have any idea if this could be it and if it is how much is it goin to cost to get fixed, would appreciate any advice cheers

I've the same problem with my Quartet Cab on the drivers side.  Leak seems to be coming through above the window seal carrier.  I think it is a dead easy job but just havn't got round to it yet. it rains - must do that - it stops raining and I forget!!!!

The proper foam gasket is still available from VW and its not overly expensive.

I had the leak before repacing my hood but didn't have it after.

Before I changed the roof I had used silicone sealant there and it helped a bit but didnt stop it much at all really.

When I changed the roof I used the proper gasket. So I cant really say if it was the new roof that cured the leak or the gasket. I expect it was a combination of the two.

Mine was leaking between the corner of the header seal and the handleI fixed it by using self almalgamating tape  been perfect ever since.

Until I knew I fixed it I used a set of waterpoof covers from halfords which saves the seats from getting wet and staining. ?15

Welli had a go at it the other day when the weather was nice and hot and fortunately it had a nice long time to dry, me and my dad stipped the seals out and the gaskets which were knackered cant afford gaskets at the moment but will get some soon but temporarily put some special black silicon sealer across the gasket and has been raining non stop today and no leaks so i think it is a success normally the seats would be soaked by now so thankyou to everyone for your help i think im going to keep the car a bit longer now its sorted. cheers

Just got back from the Stealer, I've ordered the last two rubber seals they had in stock, they should be in for collection on Monday, fingers crossed they were only a fiver and should do the trick.

Very heavy rain over the weekend and my previously water tight roof leaking like a sieve. :banghead:

Even Tian's trick of parking it pointing up hill didin't work this time. :?

Going to have a go with the silicone and that tape with a funny name so will let you know how it goes. :dontknow:

I had all sorts of problems with my roof…so I thought I would be smart and buy a brand new mohair thinking all would be sorted…

As if that was going to be that easy, I ended up making up a mixture of black silcone (same colour as my car obviously) and super glue…then I sealed the leaking areas with it.  Haven't had a leak since, and considering I live in Scotland I thought that was pretty good.

Sorry to hear that! I've manged to make space in my garage (just) so I'll be having a go at mine at some point over the coming weekend.

Good luck all and let's hope for a relatively dry autumn.

Right, I've just finished stripping out the old foam and replacing it with brand new stuff from VAG. i can see why one side was leaking so badly, half of it was missing!!! Strange though how this could cause such an ingress. It doesn't even look as if it's exposed at all. It must be because the screws are all rusty so I put Krust on them.

I haven't been out in the rain in it yet but I'll wait and see until I get some sort of covering for the seats. I don't want to stain them again.

Hubby replaced my roof vinyl at the beginning of the summer and replaced the gaskets that Ross spoke about.

Luckily I haven't had any leaks at all since, however bad the rain has been.

Good luck with yours

managed to get a resonably dry spell during the week, so I took of the front carriers and sure enought the foam sealing strips were pretty knackered. Run a line of black B&Q Roof and Gutter Sealant  down each adding a bit extra round the screw holes before re-assembling.

Been raining pretty heavy all weekend and car is as dry as a bone  :D

God bless the man who invented silicone!!
