engine bay refit

I've just sent off my brake bar (bit that goes from pedals to master cylinder, runs along the bulkhead) to be powder coated. When I removed it I noticed that the box had some sort of black silicone sealant around it. Does anyone know what this is and why its done??

 Cheers

probably to keep water out

Yes its just black sealent - most hardware stores have it - doesn't have to be black - clear or white or brown or what ever colour you can get will do - it keeps the water from getting in around the three bolts and ultimatley rusting the panel behind it. :D

Halfords do a black windscreen sealant, which I've found quite useful as quick drying and waterproof
