cabriolet windscreen and rear window..

hi..can anyone help me..a week ago some animal smashed the windscreen and rear window of my burgundy mk1 cabriolet gli..autoglass have quoted me ?500 which is nearing what i paid for the car..does anybody know how easy it is to replace the windscreen myself..and if they would know where i could get one as well..cheers…if i cant do this i might have to scrap her  :(

Some people have no respect.

It is relatively easy to replace the rear windscreen - to get it out you just push it out from the inside (although I guess you've probably extracted yours by now in pieces).

Once you have an edge or a corner out of the seal the rest should come out fairly easily.

I reckon this is probably best done on a warm day when the rubber seal is softer - although you could probably make it soft by pouring hot water onto it.

You could probably get a replacement window from a breakers - or I guess from autoglass.

To put the new window back in, you make sure the seal is clean - then lay a long piece of string in the slot that the window will fit, going twice round the inside of the seal.

Then you lay your new window on top of the seal, and pull the string from inside the seal slowly out along the edge of the window - which should (in theory) pop into the seal and stay there.

cheers guys..first fine day ive had down here...(im in south wales) i bought a shell of a mk1 cabrio from e bay ive got the front and rear glass off her and i am going to give it a try today..thanks for your help:-)
