Cabrio hood fitting.

Hi out there. I agree with ross it does feel easier to talk about Cabrio's, so here we go. I've just aquired a new vinyl hood for my 83 Karmann i've never fitted one before so can anyone offer help, guidance or tips to make the whole process as painless as possible. Thanks in anticipation.

Drew well done and thanks for all your hard work in setting up what will i hope become the best owners club ever. with your members list you can't fail.

A mk1 Cabrio is a real golf.
My real car's a 4x4.

I've got a 175kb word doc that I dragged off a site a year or so ago in anticipation to do my hood when it needed replacing (which will be soon now!). I cant remember what site it came off but it is a pretty good article.
Its about 7 pages long! Can email it to you if you like. Just PM me.

Cheers,

Ross

I know I'm gonna have the same rusty frame problem when I come to do my hood. Its good to know you can get a one a bit cheaper from GPC.

The rear window leaked when I got the car and I took the rear window and realised how rusty the frame was. Its lost its rigidity and creates a big gap at the bottom between window and frame. I cleaned the seal up and refitted it then sealed it all up with silicone sealant. It stopped the leak and hasn't started again yet, its been 2 years! The roof should stay intact enough till next summer hopefully!

Prowler, do you know if they used any sealant on your rear window when it was fitted or does it seal enough anyway? When I took mine apart there was some white sealant that looked original but had gone hard and cracked/disintegrated.

The originals were gummed up with all sorts of muck, and the seals just fell off.
The only sealant used on the new ones was a thin film of black silicone sealant inside the seal/frame joint, as shown:

The Clipper did require a bit at the bottom of the window itself, but both are bone dry now.
