Stalls when warm

Hi chaps,
I've had ongoing problems getting my '83 MK1 Gti  back on the road. Over the past few months I've had:
Engine replaced (Bottom end)
New Fuel distributor
Rebuilt Head/ new valve seals/ All gaskets changed
New rotor arm & cap / HT Leads / Plugs/ filters / fluids - you name it, it's been changed!
Had a local fella out to tune the beast so that I could once again enjoy driving it! Unfortunately, the fuel pump was knackered, so I replaced that too. Now the car starts, runs at a fast idle until warm, then stalls after about 5 minutes.
Any advice as to what may be causing this - as I'm begining to think I should wash my hands of the old dear and buy a pushbike!

Thanks,
Jim

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me opening up when hot…or…air bypass valve staying open.  Either way lean mixture when hot.

Check injector seals and for other vac leaks…drop a little oil in suspect areas and see if the car smokes as it sucks in the oil.

Thanks mate - will give that a try tomorrow. Would that also explain when I rev the engine whilst warming up, the revs tend to decrease a little when pressing the accelerator?
Will keep u posted on progress…..

That would have to be one massive air leak to stall a car!

My preferred way of looking for air leaks is to spray carb cleaner on tubes, injectors etc. If theres a leak the cleaner gets sucked into the mix and the revs wobble.

My moneys on ignition or fuel problem though.

Seems like you have done ignition so you might be onto fuel.

Jimmy,

Difficult to tell as it could be a number of things but that dip in revs could be argued as a lag for the fuel mix to stabilise.  This could be caused by a VAC leak that is delaying the lift of the flap in the main air control.

Worth checking through all the pipes for leaks as well as the servo pipe.

Hi Chaps,
Thanks for all the helpful info.
Think I've found a possible cause….
The three way pipe connector that sits on top of the Cam cover, with one pipe to the cover, one to the end of the inlet manifold and the other to the airbox - seems to have the largest hole in it. Does anybody have the part number for this connector - as trying to explain all of that to my local garage will be like getting blood from a stone.
Also, could this be the reason why it stalls?

Thanks guys,
Jim.

PS: Does anybody have a parts CD for this engine?

Cheers Simon,
That is indeed the correct part.
Can't read the number though, so if you could pass that on - that'd be great!
Thanks,
Jim
Any chance of getting hold of one of those CD's? :D
