Series 1 gli (EG) unseized but locking up

Post

So I finally got round to attempting to start on my series 1 project, the engine was seized when I bought the car, I used rust buster down the bores and it free'd off pretty easily, however it locks up after about half a turn of the cam, it doesn't just get tight it locks solid, I've only removed the rocker cover at this point, the buckets are all moving, any suggestions to check before getting deeper into the engine? image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg

Your going to have to take the head off it and look.
Easier to clean the bores if it was rusted too.

If that's the case I'm more tempted to remove the whole unit and carry out a full refurb on it, do you think a stuck valve is a possible cause? It feels like metal hitting metal as such

Could be a ring of rust on the bore restricting the stroke.

Ahh yeah possibly it does feel like something very significant though, might borrow the endoscope from work and have a look down the bores, cheers! Will post with updates

Valves don't hit the cyinders on these engines even if you disconnect the cam belt the block should still turn over.
Best bet is pull the engine out and remove the head to have a good look inside, for the price of a gasket kit and head bolts it's worth knowing the condition inside the bores and worth checking over the head and fitting new valve stem seals and checking the valve stem guides.

i'd be asking how the water got in there in the first place to make the bore rust? maybe it was laid up because of head gasket / cracked head and the water entered that way?
I'd pull it and rebuild it end of. if the bores that badly rusted it can't be good inside.

Ahh right so these are non interference engines? Are all 8v golf engines that way? I'm not too familiar with this engine as I work with much more modern stuff and haven't had time to do my homework on it, the thing is it free'd off VERY easily like hardly any effort, the car has been laid up for around 4 years and from the state of it not in the most favourable place, possibly the sea? Lol. Also the coolant level is completely full so I don't think it's got into the cylinders this way? For some extra info the car had its last mot around 30 miles before its present mileage and has sat ever since, also the car has only covered 70k and has very comprehensive history, so I'm hoping it wasn't parked up due to catastrophic failure, I know the owner wanted to get it going and when the mechanic he was using found it was seized he decided to sell and that's where I came to the rescue lol he was thinking a battery and some fresh fuel would sort it, so I believe the fault is from standing for such a long time?

Yes I believe the 1.6 and 1.8 are non interference  engines, I read it somewhere so don't blame me if I'm wrong :-).
My current engine was left outside on a pallet under some tarpalling for 4 years with out the injectors fitted and it was fine inside but I did check inside just to be sure, perhaps the fact that my brother poured some oil into the bores before layed it up helped?

They are both interference to my knowledge and training. Had both in with bent valves over the years.
Didn't know vw made a non interference engine.
I will check Autodata though to be sure cause Ive not looked it up for many years.

So assuming if mine is an inteference engine, can I check for a stuck open valve before stripping further? Would the bucket tappets show this in anyway? And if/when I remove the engine can I leave both manifolds in place until the unit is out complete then strip down for ease/access?

You might see it, don't really know.
Yes you can leave both manifolds on as long as its not a 4 branch.

Okay cool cheers it's all original, I'm thinking bonnet off, driveshafts off, radiator out and disconnect everything and lift out engine & box together, then buy a stand like this so I can be neat and meticulous
