QUICK HELP ENGINE ADVICE
I'm putting a 1.8 GTI engine in a C (no sunroof). I bought a complete GTI to use for bits and the engine came out yesterday for referb. Bad news.
The engine has some things wrong like: looks like the cambelt went awhile back and has been repaired, 2 new pistons (it that bad practice). looks like some metal probably from broken valves ahs chewed up some of the head and cylinders. The cam shaft is totally worn out and needs replacing (?100, the only bit I have a price for so far). The head gasket has gone and thats why it was a little hot… so needs a skim, a bore, new pistons+rings, and to cap it all off the crank is pitted and needs a regrind!!!
So,
A: Any idea what this should cost?
B: Should I even bother with it all, will it ever be good?
C: Can anyone suggest any other routes to getting a reliable engine into my MK1 C (don't mind the engine mount issue that's getting done this week)??? Should I buy the one in Brighton for ?75, could it be any worse?
Prices come in tomorrow from my engine man and I would like to know what to expect. The body's off for a full respray on monday and I've got it all to do!!!
Any suggestions welcome, thanks guys.

I don't have receipts for all the work so i guess alot was done by the guy himself, but the respray was ?1800 - done by a company that does showroom finishes for astons and high end exec cars. I have parts and bits receipts totalling about ?700 But havnt looked through everything yet.
Probs better askings someone else, also what i did for my mate was to find a place i liked go in asking for a quote, have a wonder round and a chat and then come back in too look at some other work they've done, chat some more and offer one of the works ?500 cash for a full respray (providing we strip it down).

You will need loads of bits off the other car anyway, so don't consider it a waste…
If you don't want to spend the money, I'd get another engine - there are LOADS about. You could even drop a 16V in it…???
