Oil deflector - Should I have one?

Hi,

My '83 GTI doesn't have a plastic oil deflector under the cam cover but my '88 Cabrio does. Should the '83 have one too?

Thanks,

Ross

Can't remember if mine has one or not. I have a feeling they didn't on the early Golfs.

Anyone else?

Wonder then if it would be worth fitting one? It might stop gunk clogging the breather in the cam cover so much and allowing oil to get to the air filter a bit. I think I've read people get these problems. I get a bit of oil on the air filter but I also know my valve stem oil seals need replacing which I think is probably the main cause.

All my 1's have them

Campaign parts list shows them as standard (026103547) as well as earlier 1.8's

Not shown on 1.6 head

Cheers,

I think I'll be fitting one next time the cam cover is off. It wouldnt do any harm and should only improve things if anything.

Cheers,Drew.

 Yep - Damn you purists !!!

This might help - MK2 GTI's running hydraulic heads had the additional Splash Gaurd fitted as standard. This was due to the Hydrualic lifters/ tappets used instead of the MK1 mechanical system.

Fitting the splash gaurd to the MK1 was an old mod that people did when they had the small gauze filter removed form inside the head as wihtout the splash gaurd and the gauze removed, oil woudl go down to the air box.

All the MK1's I've ever owned, I've always bought the gaurd and fitted it as it does help keep the air filter cleaner.
Hope htis helps Guys…

Picking up on an old thread as I had a similar question.

My 82' Gti (1.6, EG) didnt have an oil deflector fitted - part number 026-103-547 - and I wasnt aware the part existed, until browsing VW Heritage which lists it as a Mk1 part (1975-1983, 1.6 to 1.8 engines excl 16V).

Given that its a cheap part I've ordered one and will see how it fits - would be interested in any updates if anyone has good/bad/indifferent feedback.

Cheers

There wasn't one on my 83 1.8 and I've owned it 20+ years. Fitted one during my rebuild as I figured it would stop the breather getting gummed up. Not started it up yet so can't comment on success, but I can't see it doing any harm.

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here
