Mechanical or Hydraulic Tappets ?

Post

I have a 1983 GTI which is sounding a bit tappety. It should have mechanical tappets but from my research this looks like a Hydraulic head. (sorry about the messy engine).

Tappets

Is it safe to assume that it has Hydraulic tappets with this head as it has a 2nd oil return hole ?

Is there any other way to tell without removing the rocker cover ?

Thanks,

Bigmoose

It should be mechanical tappets in 83, the only way to be 100% is remove the 8 nuts, top cam belt cover and look underneath the rocker cover.

If you have 5 caps on the cam shaft then they are mechanical, if only 4 then then it's hydraulic tappets.

Picture about 1/2 way down this thread.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

if you take the cam cover off, the cam sprocket on a mechanical head has round holes in, hydro has oval holes
