Loud squeal and juddering.

Even since the lovely english weather (snow) my car has began squealing, Very loud but if i rev the engine upto about 2500rpm it goes. Think this is the alternator or cam belt?
Also between 1000 and 2000rpm the car judders alot but as soon as i take it above 2000 its fine, Any ideas?

Sounds like the alternator belt slipping, you'd soon know if it was the cam belt  :P   Are you driving the car when it starts to judder and where do you think this is coming from ?

Yeah i'm driving when the juddering happens. I think it might be miss firing.
But i've changed the plugs, leads and dizzy cap.
I did notice the plugs were arching on the block but only slightly, could this be it?

Having the exact same problem as above, have no idea what to do and I am not mechanically minded… Please please help, I love my little car and don't want to break her if this is something serious.

The noise is worse on start up, then it eases off a little and tends to come back as the car slows down to the very low revs'

I had a very similar problem a few years back, the car was a pain to start, but did eventually, it was noisy and juddered like mad. I couldn't work it out so got a guy to look at it and it turned out it was timed a tooth out.

Thanks David, I've spent a few hours late last night and this morning doing some more reading around. The noise seems to be worse at night (When lights etc… are on) I think it maybe leading more towards the alternator belt??

Also, (Total beginner here!)

Is this my Alternator belt? Where would I order a replacement from? I've had a look at GSF and there are 3 for my car, how would I know which one I'd need?

The squealing does sound belt related and yes it makes sense being the alternator if it happens more at night, never heard of it causing juddering before though, or not in my own experience.

The belt you are pointing at is the alternator. Are you sure there are 3 listed? Whats the model and engine size etc of your car?

Its a H reg 1990 Cabriolet GTI 1.8, here is the link below to GSF that comes back upon entering my reg.

Sorry to pester again, still unsure which belt I need to order up to get this horrible noise fixed ! :(My engine code is:

DX 143 983

Its a H Reg 1990 1.8 GTI Cabriolet.

Any help would be massively appreciate.

Apologies for the delay.

The different belts are apparently for different power outputs but i am unsure what yours would be. Does it say in the log book?

Someone that knows the engine outputs may be along soon…

My 1988 Gti DX engine uses a 10x950 belt I would guess yours is the same, is there anything written on you old belt, might help you to know whats fitted to yours.
You will also need to retighten the new one again after a 100 miles or so as they do stretch a bit.

The differnet belts are if you have power steering or air con which my doesn't.

Hey, no worries :o)

Nothing in the logbook, apparently the DX code refers to the engine output…. But when I compared that against the GSF website i was still confused  :P

I bought a Cabriolet owners manual not long after getting the car there is a section on "VEE BELTS" and I can see an entry for:

Generator and coolant pump - 9.5 x 950
Coolant pump and compressor for A/C - 12.5 x 947
Generator and compressor for A/C - 9.5 x 630
Coolant pump and hydraulic pump for PAS - 9.5 x 730
Generator (With PAS) - 9.5 x 865

But…

The belt on my car has the markings of "6218MC" - This brings back a belt of (see link)

GATES GLOBAL ONLINE CATALOGUE

Which is a different size again (confused.com)

This is the part number from gsf 133AA0100
its the 10x950 listed for a 1990 DX engine golf, £4.20
you are having problems with the one that is fitted so someone could of fitted the wrong belt.
the one above will fit your car. Try it, if it makes no difference take it back for a refund.

HUGE thank you, have just ordered as click and collect from GSF for tomorrow morning : )

Can this belt effect your engine starting nicely each time? Sometimes I have to pump the accelarator pedal   :offtopic:

In a word no.
the belt has nothing to do with starting, with the Gti golf you should not need to pump the accelerator pedal on starting, the drivers manual says don't touch the accelerator pedal.
If its not been serviced for a while, new spark plugs, ht leads, dissy cap, rotor arm and often over looked air and fuel filter can make a lot of difference. If they are new you need to start looking at the cold start valve, WUR, AAV, old leaking fuel injectors, the list goes on….
with looking at your other thread I would try to get a thermostat fitted 1st and get rid of the mayo etc…

Thank you again, points duly noted, It hasn't been serviced for a while and the parts you mentioned are over 12 months old (have checked receipts) I will work through the list slowly and eliminate as we go (Paying attention 1st to my other thread that you've kindly assisted on)
